There are so many great books to learn to play...I'm a fan of the musician's institute publications. They have a pretty good selection and they cover quite a lot...The best books are ones that you can understand. Everybody learns differently (especially music).

So I'd say, hit up a music store and check out the books section. But I would definitely recommend checking out the Musician's Institute Publications. I'm not sure everywhere they're sold, but I get mine from guitarcenters.

There are so many books and now videos out there that it's not even funny. Hal Leonard has a lot of good books for beginners, and most of his books come in notation and tab. This all depends on where you live, well I guess you could order them from the Internet. I've been hearing a lot about this new guy, he has a site called Bill Brutal Online Video Guitar Lessons, why not check him out !!!!! http://www.billbrutal.com/

Hal Leonard's Beginner's Guitar Method, Book One, is an excellent way to begin your journey to play.

It has instructions on how to hold the guitar, to tune it, how to use the guitar pick, and has bunches of chords that you must learn. Also, and most important, it has within the book basic music theory that can teach you how to play music with the guitar.
