This is a difficult question to answer, because there are many different dispositions within each breed. I volunteer at our local shelter and we have a program called "Camp Paws" which is to familiarize children with the caring and training of dogs. We have a couple of labs who absolutely adore kids and a couple others who don't care for them at all. We have beagles that will run to be with kids and others who will strain on the lead to get away. We also have a 6 month old pit puppy who is awesome and very well behaved with the kids and is also socialized with kittens. So there is really no way of saying which breed is best with children. It's going to depend on the individual dog.

The most important thing is that the dogs are socialized with children at the earliest age possible. It makes it easier for them to accept the child in their home.

i've had Spanials, Labradors, Collies but the best by far is the Retriever - soft mouthed, gentle, docile and so layed back. Mine is now 9 mths and I have a 2 & 4 yr old and she has to put up with so much but she takes it all without any hint of annoyance.

She is truly excellent with very small children

There is no one breed that is going to be great with kids. Dogs are individuals. I do hate seeing people get a toy breed when they have young children though. I'm sure many little dogs are great with well behaved children, but I don't think it is fair to the little dog to put up with kids.
I would never recommend my breed, Whippets, to anyone with young children. However, again, many people have them and they do well.
I hate reading my 'whatever' breed puts up with all sorts of stuff from the kids. No dog should have his tail pulled, hair yanked, kicked. No one who can't control their child has any business owning a dog. Yes, the dog may put up with the ill behaved child to a point. Any and every dog will bite. Some just have a higher pain tolerance and annoyance tolerance.

I've read that, in studies conducted, the Golden Retriever is the least likely to bite out of any dog breed.

Bichons are sweet friendly dogs that love people and just want to be with you. My Bichon LOVES everyone and is very delicate around my newborn niece. I highly recommend them.

Bichon frises(small white) are very good with smaller kids

Cocker spaniels are good too

If you are looking for a bigger dog, go with the golden retriever or a lab

EDIT: *Yorkies are good with older children, they are too hyper and playful (a little too rough) for little kids

yep golden rets are good pets... so as to pit bulls... the dogs can perceive the baby's cry as a cry of a kitten... thus, if the baby cries, the dog 'might' attack it... it may be ridicule for us to keep the baby away from any dogs but its still a precaution.

its better to prevent it than to risk lives... its sad but its the truth...

good luck=)
