Your fear is rightly founded. God forbid you have got to do something with the policemen. They are really unpredictable and highly corrupt. Most of them act in haste without following any set of protocol and they always will have the last word. It also depends on how rich or poor you are. They are very imposing and threatening if you try to tell them that their reasoning or logic is wrong. They also stoop low at times to twist the tale in case you bribe them. I really do not have any good opinion about them and like most other beaurocrats they too are highly pampered lot. There might be exception to the rule. But very rarely you come across such sincere policemen. They are just a rarity like an Unicorn.

Your question is based on news article or media report. If the persons involved were under influence of alcohol and tried to verbal or physical assault on the police, the police can justify their action. I don't live in India but I hear rich peoples sons do such things. If it is correct, the police need to put their thumbs down and set an example. If the persons involved were not drunk and there is no proof to that, the police could be a guilty party. Without knowing all facts it is very hard to answer this question or label police as criminals. Till then, you may not trust your legal system but you must obey the law of the country.

No, policemen aren't supposed to act like that, and when protectors turn criminals, USUALLY they get prosecuted like everyone else. Can we trust our law enforcement system? YES. Do you really want to get rid of all the policemen for a week and just SEE what happens? Look at it this way, is our system PERFECT? No, but it's one of the best. You've mentioned a LOT of negative things, but I can promise you, there are a LOT more good things that happen, you just don't hear so much about them, because it's supposed to be part of the job. Policemen are human like everyone else, and some give in to temptation, while the VAST majority are good people and great cops. If policemen were "Criminals in disguise" would they really take a bullet to protect a hostage? Would they stop drunk drivers from endagering other drivers? Would they take the time to try and stop a complete stranger from commiting suicide?

Everywhere in the "free" world, the police are just people. There are as many good ones and bad ones as there are good and bad people in the general population. What makes their crimes worse is that they use the power of the law to hide behind. I think they learned that from politicians.

I had a house robbed by a sheriff's deputy in El Dorado County, CA some years ago. Seems that there was a group that would notice while on patrol if people seemed to be away, then break into their houses.

No one is above law that’s the basic principle & any law enforcing person if behaves in such an indecent & unlawful manner he has to face most severe punishment then any other civilian. On this principle the Indian Legal system works & the courts take a serious note of such acts of police officers who commit such offence that too during their duty hours. Although a police officer is on duty for 24 hours a day & is behavior towards the general public has to be taken note any time but when he is to interrogate any person or investigate any offence he must maintain his dignity & decorum. In the recent years you must have noticed that whenever any such incidence comes in notice of the courts a very strict action is ordered by the courts, even the superior officers have to take such issues very seriously whenever reported to them. You will also find public notices displayed in the police stations regarding contacting senior officers if bribe is being demanded by any police official of the police station similarly you can even make complaint for any misbehavior by the police official to the superior police officer if it happens with you. If the general public takes such steps these police officials who fail to maintain decorum of the uniform they wear can be checked & proper law & order maintained.

There are a few bad apples out there, but the vast majority of police officers are not bad.

Also, as was previously mentioned, this happened in India, and has nothing to do with American Law Enforcement.
