Much higher than at any other time, actually.
For most of Christianity's existence, the common believer was forbidden to read the Bible, either through direct commands, or de facto due to the combination of
1. The vast majority of people were illiterate
2. The Bible was not allowed to be printed in the common language of the populace.
The Bible was a book for priests, not the common man. They interpreted the writings and communicated them to the masses. The printing press was the greatest blow to religion ever. For the first time, it was possible for there to be enough copies for the average person to have one, and they could be printed in whatever language the printer wanted. With the increase in printing came more education so people were actually capable of reading it as well.
This led to, among other things, the Protestant Reformation, the splintering of the faith into many different sects, a rise in nonbelievers, and generally paved the way for the modern world.
The more people actually read the Bible, the more people either reject it or sequester themselves off into little groups to stand against others who have read it and emphasized different words. They have rendered themselves much less of a force or threat in the world.
Yes, Christian thinking still influences most of American culture, most people by default claim to believe in it, and the majority of them are very very annoying. But it is a lot better to have 1000 little splinter groups that can annoy you than one monolitic power that controls every aspect of your life.
The more people read the Bible the less power it has. So please, everyone read it and have a copy ready at all times (I reccomend taking them from hotel rooms to keep from supplying more money to religious publishers)

There seems to be enough mature believers in the USA to prevent another attack from our enemies. Read Psalm 33:10 The percentage is probably low but enough to sustain our Freedom. I believe that the percentage has increased since 9/11.

I do not know the %, but what comes to me. I love to study my Bible. I have different translations. The message is the same, but I like different ways to describe the same thing. I get deeper to the text.

Very, very low. Most Christians have no clue that their God repeatedly COMMANDED his followers to kidnap, enslave, hurt, rape, forcibly abort, and kill other people.
