Probably not...

A free malware scan / removal at Trend Micro would be a much better idea... http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

I like this scan because it detects viruses, worms, spyware, greyware, etc... all in one shot. No need to scan with several different programs. I still keep AVG and SpywareBlaster installed to prevent most nasty things from getting in... Both are freeware...

From my experience using my own desktop as well as helping restored friends' computers and laptops from virus infection, using safe mode is a good way of recovery. But you must know how to do it. .. First you go into safe mode (without doing system restore yet). Then use your up-to-date anti virus to scan the whole computer to get rid of the viruses. After that check your 'My Documents'.. check every folders by exploring. If you see unknown files that are duplicated they are likely to be virus. You must delete them. ..... Then, still in safe mode, do the system restore to a date when your computer was working fine........ After the restore, rescan your computer again with anti virus. If all is well turn off system restore and do a disk cleanup. Then turn on system restore to create a new restore point. .. Then when every steps have been done. Turn on computer normally and check the 'My Documents' folder. When you do system restore, files in 'My Documents' are not affected. They remain intact or infected if the virus has not been deleted. ... Hope I am not confusing you. Reread my answer to fully understand. ... Hope this helps.

Usually not. You need to run an anti virus program. Here are links to a couple of free ones. And don't worry about the free part, this software is as good as any that you pay for.

AVG

Unlikely - in fact you could make the problem worse!

Try googling the virus name - and find a solution to fix it.
