Of course they're there to make money - we are being screwed in every which way imaginable by this government and always will be until we have the sense to out them!
They do not cut down on accidents. If everyone stuck to the speed limit because of them then why, whenever you're approaching one do you see nothing but brakes lights from all the cars in front????

They are there for safety reasons. Most large cities can't afford to have enough traffic cops to stop and ticket all the speeders and red light runners.

I used to work in the Financial district in San Francisco. Three of the people I worked with were crossing the street and were hit by a car that was speeding and ran the light. One was in ICU for 2 weeks with her hip and leg crushed. One had a broken arm and leg and was hospitalized for a week. The third had a broken leg, but was released from the hospital the same day. The drive kept going. If it wasn't for the Speed Camera, they probably would not have found the driver later.

There are too many people on the roads that are in a hurry, not paying attention, yakking on their cell phones, texting on their cell phones, etc. Often times, the cameras are the only way of catching these idiots before they injure someone else or themselves as mentioned above.

Yes, they make money off the tickets. However, the cameras are there for safety reasons not because big brother wants to rip off the poor drivers.

I believe they cut accidents, but that they also provide cash for the coffers - the two things are not mutually exclusive.

However, the law of unintended consequences applies. When the cameras were introduced I doubt if anyone considered that it would make motorists feel oppressed. This makes people feel resentful, and so less inclined to stick to other rules. This might mean speeding elsewhere, or it might mean getting back at "them" in some other way. So while accidents might go down in come places ,they may well rise in others, and they may contribute to other forms of crime or civil disobedience - which leads to the breakdown of civilised society.

Now if people were "nabbed" by traffic cops for bad driving (which might include speeding) then they might be more inclined to feel it was fair. Automated justice doesn't always feel like this.

"we are being screwed in every which way imaginable by THIS GOVERNMENT "???? I take that to mean that you think George Bush sits down at night and decides where he is going to put speeding cameras the next day. I'm sure he has long meetings about that very subject, and I'll bet they discuss the color of paint in the intersection and the type film to use in the camera. I wonder if they discuss whether they will give a postal break to the mailers, as well? Give it a rest.

The cameras are a local, at best a STATE decision. Of course they are a revenue stream for those governments! But you know what? All you have to do to cancel out that revenue stream is two little things - slow down to the speed limit and don't run red lights! Wow, see how simple that is? Oh, you mean George Bush is pushing down on your gas pedal, too, and forcing you to speed? Gosh, maybe, in that case, it IS a huge government plot to overthrow, uh, itself...? Oh, just the republicans, huh?

Since when does the constitution grant you the right to put others in danger with reckless driving and speeding? The speed limit is a law passed by your elected representatives. You don't like it, then campaign against it and vote them out of office. Maybe you could just vote for anarchy? Until then, just obey the speed limit and other driving laws and you won't have any trouble.

They are there to make money, I also think some of them cause accidents
In a area in the South Wales Valleys where there are speed camera`s there are also flowers where someone has died in quite a few places i think the camera`s helped to cause these accidents because the people more than likely slammed on their brakes and lost control of their cars when they saw the camera`s
I know they shouldn't have been speeding but there must be a better way

Yes to start with they were for safety but as the cops and local authorities realised they they are making money then they are happy with it.
May be in a few years time when almost 90% of the drivers have been fined then and only then less people will die and cops and local authorities will not get any money.

The municipalities of the United States are belling up (or did you think all this unchecked spending wasn't going to catch up to us). Every State across the country is coming up with new and invasive ways of making money. Sometimes it works out for the little guy (see New Jersey's new security license) and sometimes it hurts us (like the camera). But these fines exist only to raise money for the state. Which makes you wonder where all the tax dollars are going.

The police are dedicated to the power of whatever chum is holding their time card signature, and will carry out that policy, and also any hidden from the public procedures to obtain their pre-set ambitions of power, with their orgasm of fame, glory, pride, and all the trappings of the condemned. The speed cameras will serve to tie up our already burdened courts, the person driving may have a look alike mask on, maybe even look alike Nixon, they seem to like to blame him for the sins of the past.

It's not to make money for the Police, as none of the money goes to the Police. It all goes to the Home Office and it's purely a money making scam.

Accident statistics actually go up at the majority of sites speed cameras are at, possibly due to people seeing them late and suddenly braking hard.
