Is it wrong? Is it right (if so under what circumstances, how often etc)?

Look at it from a rational point of view. Jesus turned water into wine. Jesus came to save the people not to lead them into temptation. Therefore drinking must be OK.

With that said if you were to be a drunk and live to drink, then it has consumed your life and you put it before God. That may be a sin.

Scripture contains many warnings regarding the drinking of alcohol (Leviticus 10:9; Numbers 6:3; Deuteronomy 29:6; Judges 13:4,7,14; 1 Samuel 1:15; Proverbs 20:1; 31:4,6; Isaiah 5:11,22; 24:9; 28:7; 29:9; 56:12; Micah 2:11; Luke 1:15). However, Scripture does not necessarily forbid a Christian from drinking beer, wine, or any other drink containing alcohol. In fact, some Scriptures discuss alcohol in positive terms. Ecclesiastes 9:7 instructs “drink wine with a merry heart.” Psalm 104:14-15 states that God gives wine “that makes glad the heart of men.” Amos 9:14 discusses drinking wine from your own vineyard as a sign of God’s blessing. Isaiah 55:11 encourages “yes, come buy wine and milk…”

What God commands Christians regarding alcohol is to avoid drunkenness (Ephesians 5:18). The Bible condemns drunkenness and its effects (Proverbs 23:29-35). Christians are also commanded to not allow their bodies to be “mastered” by anything (1 Corinthians 6:12; 2 Peter 2:19). Drinking alcohol in excess is undeniably addictive. Scripture also forbids a Christian from doing anything that might offend other Christians or might encourage them to sin against their conscience (1 Corinthians 8:9-13). In light of these principles, it would be extremely difficult for any Christian to say he is drinking alcohol to the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31).

I don't have any specific verses for you but this is what I've been told. In the bible they drank wine. I'm pretty sure it says somewhere that you're just not supposed to drink in excess (get drunk). The reason some churches have problems with it is you are not supposed to do anything to ruin your ability to witness and when SOME people see you drinking they will automatically think either you aren't a Christian or that your a hypocrite.

Jesus told them, "Fill the jars with water." So they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, "Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter." So they took it. And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine, ... (John 2:7-9)

Wine is used throughout both the Old and New Testaments. The first recorded miracle of Jesus was to turn water in wine at the wedding in Cana.

It is true that we should not become drunk but used in moderation, wine is a biblically acceptable beverage.

Go, eat your bread with joy and drink your wine with a merry heart, because it is now that God favors your works. (Ecclesiastes 9:7)

What would Jesus do? Jesus had a cup of wine with dinner.

If some people wish to totally forego alcohol to eliminate the temptation to over indulge, that's fine. But I don't think they should force that unbiblical practice onto others.

With love in Christ.

Drinking is not a sin according to the Bible.

In Psalm 104: 14-15, King David writes that God gave us wine in order to "gladden the heart of man." In Matthew 11:19, Christ makes the point that his enemies called him a drunkard because he drank wine with the party animals of his day. And, of course, at the beginning of Christ's ministry, his first miracle was the turning of water into wine, and his last act before being crucified was to share bread and wine with his followers, what we call the "last supper."

In moderation, it's fine. I'm going to look for some scriptures. Hang on.

In Ephesians 5: "And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery ..." Note it doesn't say abstain, just don't get drunk.

I've discovered that there are 228 references to wine and 19 to strong drink. I'm going to give you the link. Nobody wants an answer that long. :-)

Edit: FYI, I don't drink. Just a choice.

There's nothing wrong with drinking. The circumstances and reason for doing so are usually the problem. Why are you drinking and where are you doing it? If you're a Christian and you wouldn't want another Christian to see what you're doing and where you're doing it, there's a problem.

Proverbs 31:4-7

"It is not for kings, O Lemuel--not for kings to drink wine, not for rulers to crave beer, lest they drink and forget what the law decrees, and deprive all the oppressed of their rights.

"Give beer to those who are perishing, wine to those who are in anguish; let them drink and forget their poverty and remember their misery no more."

---

Or to put it another way, it is acceptable to drink in moderation to unwind after a rough day or in a rough time, but do not drink when it may adversely affect your responsibilities. Common sense, really.

(I say "in moderation" because the book of Proverbs also has plenty of unpleasant things to say about drunks.)

Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities. (I Timothy 5:23)

the Bible says, "Wine is a mocker, and strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise." Proverbs 20:1 Wine mocks people, it makes them think there are somebody, and it makes them look stupid, and people laugh at them, drinking makes people raging, they often get violent, that's why sooo often men that drink beat and rape women, and mom's that are drunk beat their kids, because it's raging, it make them angry or violent.
