What is it with these dog breeders who do not know things like how long the gestation period is, how to qualify a false pregnancy from a real one, if the dam has any milk, what to do if she doesn't.

These are things (and there are a bunch more) which should be 'known' BEFORE the important decision is made to put a litter on the ground. What on earth is going on here?

Its not that the questions are stupid, Nanook, but needing to ask them after the fact is very stupid. We are well beyond the need to follow some trial-and-error protocol when it comes to breeding, whelping, rearing and raising puppies. This stuff needs to be properly researched, rehearsed, and researched again BEFORE there is a living, breating, thinking animal left to suffer because some inept and/or incompetant breeder was 'surprised' by something that should have been rudimentary to her knowledge prior to putting on the Breeder's hat.

Tony comments:
You may be content to sit around the fire making smores and singing Cumbya while these Breeders subject their dams and newborn puppies to the needless sufferings associated with their uninformed practice, but I am not.

Example:
A new born pup that has not beed fed for 24 hours ... and the "Breeder" wants to know what she should be doing?

There should have been a contingency plan for this BEFORE the breeding ever took place! And I don't mean run and hide in cyberspace while the litter on the ground is suffering at the door of the Breeder's ignorance. Sadly, this is but one example ... there are several more.

What's the answer? Spay and Neuter doesn't solve the problem - we're sterilizing the wrong species.

I agree with the question 100% and I also agree that no one knows everything but YA is not the place to do research and coming here with a bunch of questions, after the fact, is not research it is just down right dangerous. Not all that answer questions here on YA know what they are talking about and if the asker doesn't know either how will they choose the correct advice? The place to start when considering breeding is to research your breed, reading all you can about the process and talking to and get advice from knowledgeable breeders. That excuse that they have to start somewhere is just bull because most are not asking simple questions they are asking how to and what to do and even it the breeding was an accident there is still time to do research before the litter arrives, not only that but some of the question could be answered when they take the b itch in to see the vet to make sure all is well but the problem is most people that are asking here are only looking to make money. Asking here is the cheapest route to go that will not cut into their profits. A responsible person would look to other more reliable sources for answers to their questions so the only thing that can be deducted from the questions here, are those people are nothing more then BYBers. However, I do not think that the spaying and neutering of all animals is the answer, the ONLY way to combat ignorance is through education. I understand your fustration and asked a similiar question, have a look.

It is truly a shame that more research is put into the newest electronic gadget than a living breathing creature.

Well I see it didn't take you long to start to stare at your computer in sheer wonderment.

OF course I agree with what your saying and I agree with Shepherd girl in what she has said. It's tough to find some here who have a clue.
I grew up in a home with a dad who bred and show dogs. I never felt like I knew it all so I went to school to learn more and then found a mentor for my breed of choice. No short cuts just good old book learning and hands on practice. Took me 4 years and with my mentor by my side whelped my first litter.
There is so much more to breeding than most people know and to produce quality pups that people will really want and keep and care for. For whatever venue they choose.
Oh my goodness, what some will put their dog through just to make a few dollars.
I just answered a question on how to know what happens and what to do when the mom starts to ween the pups. I think I've answered the same question so many times. I shudder to think if someone like me or someone who is knowledgeable wasn't here to guide them.
Like some other have already said welcome to Yahoo Dogs!

I know what you mean, and it really gets me mad!

Ignorance is no excuse! And the litter being an accident is no excuse! Any dog not qualified to breed should be spayed!

I want to breed yorkshire terriers someday, but I would never, ever get myself into situations like these people. They have no idea what genetic testing is neccessary to produce a healthy litter. They have no idea that the only dogs that should be AKC registered, excellent examples of their breed, which usually means having a champion pedigree. They have no idea about the mental and life threatening physical issues that threaten their pets, and their puppies when they irresponsibly breed and whelp, knowing nothing about what they're doing.

They dont have a clue because they dont really care! All they are interested in the cash!! £££££$$$$$$$ thats all they see. Thats why there are so many needing homes they see ££$$$ signs & dont really give a **** whats going on with the pups as long as the money is rolling in. I think breeders should have a limit on what they can breed within a year with a licence & vets proof etc it should all be on a data base to try get it all under control to stop the likes of backyard breeding, breeding for money etc

It is because you don't need a licensee to breed. Any Blow Joe can get two dogs and leave them alone along enough to create another litter of puppies. I think that we should regulate breeders by making them take classes and have licenses. Have you ever seen a puppy mill?! It is the worse thing I have ever personally had to deal with. Anyone who breeds should have to spend one year in a shelter, seeing all the wonderful dogs and cats that have to be put to sleep because there just aren't enough homes for them. If you love your animals than you should spay or neutering them. I'm not saying that we shouldn't breed at all but it needs to be extremely regulated. If you spent one day in a shelter I think you would agree too.

Nanook: Than you didn't have to clean and prep a beautiful, sweet animal to be put to sleep because of thoughtless people who won't alter their animals. The cons? If you alter your animal when they are puppies the only risks are going under the knife. You watch them like a hawk? It takes two seconds for a male to jump over your fence and attach to your female. I went to school for 4 years for this stuff, I've done my research and I've had experiance. I've had to look into a loving, sweet dog's eyes and know that we have to put him down because he simply wasn't wanted anymore. You do that a few times THAN talk about not altering your animals.

i agree with everything that's been said i also agree to the one who say's give these people a benifit of a doubt, maybe there asking so they can learn, how to become a educated breeder, if people would give others advice and help this would be a better world, try giveing them a few web sites, rome wasn't build in a day, good bredders don't become the best over night, for those of u who r upset with the questions well isn't that what this site is for, no disrespect , just ask for some kindess in the world, share your knowledge!!

I agree with everything being said about the backyard breeder and their ignorance and their motivation being money in their pockets.
Another major problem is they don't screen the homes for their puppies. Anyone walks in the door with the money and off they go with a puppy. This is how so many dogs end up in shelters. That impulse buyer gets home and finds out this pup is a lot of work. A few months later, pup is in the shelter. No training and out of control, no one is going to adopt him.

Your right but on the bright side by asking these questions you will know if they are a credible breeder or not. As for why the answer is much easier:
1- Your not required to have any license or certificate to Breed Dogs. ( The good Breeders are more than happy to show theirs and their Champion Dogs)
2- The law is very weak in terms of stopping animal abuse or PUPPY MILLS.

Knowing what to ask and look for is the best knowledge to have.

Back yard breeders. Totally clueless. These people are in it for a quick buck and nothing more. Most care less about the welfare of the animals and the betterment of the breed. If only the BYB's volunteered at a rescue center and saw the true horror of where their poor irresponsibly bred dogs end up...
