Neutrogena Acne Wash is the best over the counter treatment. ProActive tends to irritate the skin or do nothing at all. It will take time, and Clearasil or Seabreaze is also a good leave on. Also AquaGlycolic has a line for the skin that is over the counter. It has glycolic acid in it which unclogs pores and helps with wrinkles, which I'm sure at 13 you don't have but it will help later on in life.

I honestly find the simple methods, the most effective. Get a decent face wash, one that works well with your skin. Figure out what skin type you have and go from there. Wash morning and night, without fail and always remove all traces of makeup if you wear any. Get a moisturiser for day, and a night cream. Moisturise your face morning and night after cleansing. Exfoliate once a week but be gentle. Face mask once a week to a fortnight. And to use directly on spots, antibacterial creams such as sudocrem, savlon or germaline work great on spots. A dab of perfume on them (as long as the spot is not open ie from picking *dont pick!*) on the spot will also help dry it up, make it smaller and reduce redness without drying the skin around it. Just dont use much. I personally find acne treatments are far too harsh on the skin. It may get rid of acne, but your skin gets so so dry, and sometimes acne treatments have left my spots even more inflamed. It must just depend on the skin type.

FORGET ABOUT THOSE CRAZY EXPENSIVE ACNE TREATMENTS! You will just be wasting your money. My friend used Proactiv and her skin still is full of blackheads, pimples and looks awful! Stick with the basics, sweetie. Don't use cleansers that are too harsh, the oil glands just become more active, just making matters worse. Try desert essence face wash (available at health food stores), but don't use clean and clear face wash (it just clogged my pores). Exfoliate (with a gentle exfoliant) once a week (I absoluteley LOVE St. Ives apricot scrub). After washing, use a mild toner (such as loreal for combination skin, because the others are too gentle or too drying. Oil of olay toner is pretty good too), and then aply a moisterizer (make sure its not too greasy or too light), to balance your skin. Then before going to bed after washing your face, apply clean and clear or zapzit acne/blemish treatment with stalystic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Less is more w/ that stuff. Remember to apply that to your back too. After exercising, when you come home from school, or maybe in the school bathroom during lunch you can take a wet paper towel (or a cottonelle towelette) and wipe your face and your back. After exercising, the salt crystals from the sweat can clog your pores. Good luck!

I reccomend visiting a dermatologist if you have health insurance. They will be able to prescribe to you the strongest meds for your skin. I have seen Accutane work wonders on friends. I have tried Differin, and it did nothing for me. I also went on some sort of antibiotics for a while (don't remember the name) and they worked pretty welll too.
If you just want to give a shot at over the counter stuff, get a gentle cleansing wash (I use Loreal Ideal Balance foaming face wash), then moisturize (Cetaphil), and then use a benzoyl peroxide product. Use the benzoyl peroxide every night. Make sure you NEVER sleep with makeup on at night, and wash your face every morning AND night.

Don't use Proactive. I used it for a year and two months and it did absolutely nothing positive for my skin. If anything, it irritated my face moreso than it was.
