My brothers and I used to tease my sister this way when we were all kids. Sadly, the joke is on me now as I am forty years old and obese. I used to enjoy running over ten years ago but have since put on almost 6 stones. I can run about a quarter mile but then get out of breath and find the running devastating. What should I do to help myself? I am trying to cut down on my food intake, but its very hard...

About 5 times a week I have been taking our dog for what I call a power walk. I walk for about 3 miles and run about 1/2 mile staggered about the place. The running is getting a little easier. Its a bit demoralising as I used to run 10 miles and cycle 28 a day.

wow its great that you had such a great exercise routine when you were younger. look back on that experience and remember that if you could do all that then you can do anyting! walking and staggered running is a great start to get back to where you were! Sounds like you just need some encouragement! so keep up the good work. Maybe you could find a buddy to run with?

Yeah, I hear you. The forty body is not the same as it used to be. I tried to show my daughter how to do a hand stand, well I use to do this at least ten times a day so easily twenty years ago, well my forty body was not having it at all. My arm buckled, and gave way, and I cam crashing to the floor. Same with a cartwheel. I have learned to just give in and do what I my forty body will do that is ride a bike, take a stroll in the park - eat less.

Walk - do not run - to your nearest sporting goods store and purchase a small 3 or 4 foot trampoline.

Do your jogging in place on the trampoline while watching TV, until your knees are ready for the real thing.

Your knees, muscles, and tendons have not developed enough to handle the extra weight you are pounding them with. It's OK to relive the past, because it can inspire your future, but the dream could crash forever after a knee injury.

Don't take the risk - allow your body the time to adjust, and you will grow into your goal eventually, injury-free.

Eat only when hungry and not more than thrice a day. Nothing other than water in between. Include plenty of uncooked vegetables and fruits in each meal, preferably 50%. Chew each morsel at least 32 times to activate ur body to generate signals of hunger/fullness. Obey these signals.

Take light exercises and brisk walks regularly preferably twice a day.

U will achieve what u have not even dreamt and that too in a reasonable time. Do not be in a hurry.

Join the crowd--it seems like most of us who are 40-ish are also more round-ish. Start out walking instead of running. Work your way up to the more strenuous exercise. Keep cutting back the extra calories and you will see results. Just remember, it did not come on overnight, so it will not go away overnight. Just keep plugging onward and it will come off. Is your sister laughing at YOU, now? Ooooooh , payback is a witch, isn't it?

I can understand how difficult it is for you, especially as you used to be so fit. It sounds to me that you are doing pretty well already, don't try to push yourself too far and too fast, you will end up unwell. Keep doing as you are, when it becomes easier (this will take time!!) you can take your excercise to the next step and try running a little further. Well done for making the effort, and good luck with the dieting.

Find a good mile long route that circles your house. Jog for as much of it as you possbily can. Walk if you have to, but make sure you don't stop moving. And time yourself. Next time, try to do that mile in a better time. And each time yu do it try to do it in a faster time. Eventually you'll find yorself jogging a mile easily!

Good luck pal.

Eat healthily and go to the gym atleast 4 times a week, you can get a gym instructor to do you a programme and they will change it for you as you fitness levels increase.

Go for walks instead. Over time, increase the amount of walking you have completed in a set number of minutes. You will find your body adjusts over time and you are feeling healthier, and possibly either losing weight or losing inches. It worked for me when I kept with it.
