Is it true that some forms of arts are not really effective when an attacker is armed or is very strong? Would u know where i can find a good instructor or school? Thanks in advance for comments and help.

I think personal safety is a responsibility for both genders. We have this thing where females must be weaker so they will get attacked more, yet men statistically get into more fights (although women are quickly catching up). As a woman, I am 90% more likely to get attacked by an acquantance than a total stranger. As scary as the world is becoming, getting jumped is still not the norm.

Anyways, it doesn't matter what style you choose (unless they teach you to wrestle with knife-wielder- that's just stupid). What matters is that you constantly practice your self-defense so that it becomes second nature to you. No style makes you invincible, and you will get hurt in some way. You have to stay calm, incapacitate the assailant, and run. You don't want to get into a street fight or a wrestling match. Good instructors will tell you all of this. Just ask them what self-defense means to them, and you'll get a good idea how they teach (and of course, watch a class or two).

As for the pepper spray, I'd say forget it. Knowing me and my suitcase/purse, I could probably get two or three good strikes off in the time it'd take me to find the can.

Yeah there should be more females in martial arts because they are the most likely to be attacked, i think alot of women do some sort of self defence they just dont persue MA as a sport or a commitment, just learning the basics that may help them in a fight

Yes, they should. I don't know where you live, so I can't tell you what's available. Filipino martial arts are good for taking away strength and size.

...and to the guy that says his daughters carry handguns, mace and tazesr, thats great, but I'd love to see them get use any of those if I'm less than 25 feet away from them.

i believe both sexes would benefit from learning martial arts in some way or another. Males do get rob / subjected to violence/ can protect their girl when needed too :P

no. it's really how you apply them. my martial arts include 2 styles, fast and groundwork, the other power and improvisation in fights. they work really well together but if i were to meet some guy armed, you have to apply what you learned and improvise because of the situation. it goes for all styles of martial arts.

My daughters prefer to use 45 auto compact ten shot pistols; or tasers if they want to immobilize their prey so they can play with it. Pepper spray and tear gas also work quite well.
