why not just run fartleks without stopping for distance splits?

this is confusing. I'm wondering why this is in a summer training program.

Long intervals serve several purposes. The first is to help the body adjust to running at faster than race pace to improve your speed.

While Fartlek is effective, the long intervals better simulate race conditions. In addition, since it is far less free form than Fartlek, the amount of work that you put in can be easily quantified. Lastly, running on the track for time will help you learn to sense your pacing. Fartlek and similar activities don't help you learn this. After enough intervals, you should be able to say "that was a 72 second lap (or whatever) without even hearing a time.

Have a great summer.

Both of these accomplish similar goals. The idea is to build your fast twitch muscle fibers which will allow you to run faster. The advantage of doing 10 800s is you know exactly how far you are running and can make better computations of speed than doing fartleks.
