I would say an early 90's Honda Civic Hatchback (90-91) would be ideal - great gas mileage (40-50 mpg), lots of cargo room for it's size, fun to drive, last forever. Just try to find a well maintained one that is not modified

Why not a honda civic with the large cargo area.
You can store your drums.
As a college kid would get the most fuel efficient car they offer for the price.
In 1992, had a Honda Civic and used to get close to 45 mpg

Jeep Patriot sport 4x4. A nice simple little SUV with plenty of cargo room. Will get good gas mileage and be excellent for bad weather and winter driving. And its a Jeep!!
Enough with the Hondas!!!

Find a mid 70's Volvo wagon. They'll run forever, have plenty of trunk space, cheaper than dirt and are mostly ignored by the cops.
