How badly does it hurt, do they take the whole nail off, and can people with their toenail removed swim and do other physical activities?

Having a toenail removed can be somewhat uncomfortable, but a mild pain killer will take care of the discomfort and it won't last long. The important thing is to keep the nail bed protected until it's healed in order to prevent infection. Now that is painful. Follow doctor's orders and advice carefully. The discomfort of having a nail removed is, in my opinion, far less painful than a bad tooth.

Once the nail bed heals you can swim and do the usual activities you do. You need to take care until the healing has occurred otherwise the nail bed can get infected. It can be quite painful for up to a couple of weeks but I'm sure your doctor will prescribe pain control to help you through.

I think it will be horribly painful. Why should anyone remove toenail. If it is infected you can cut it and remove the defective part. As long as the root remains, it will grow again.

It hurts, but not as badly as a toenail that's ingrown.
