Sounds like warped rotors. Get yours turned flat if possible (usually not possible). Or go have some new ones put on.

Typically the front brake rotors are warped (out of round). It is also possible to happen to the rear brakes also, although in your case I believe those are drum brakes. It is mostly an inconvenience, however brakes are obviously a huge safety concern so it is best to have it looked at. Generally the rotors are replaced and also the brake pads if they are worn enough. Be sure to buy high quality rotors as the cheap ones get hot and warp when they cool, especially if cooled rapidly like through a mud puddle.

Hope this helps.

If it shudders only when braking it is being caused by warped rotors, remove them and any machine shop can resurface them for a nominal fee, if they are worn too far they will have to be replaced. After you reinstall them tighten your lug nuts with a torque wrench, improperly and over tightened lug nuts are the biggest cause of warped rotors, the other cause is over heating caused by poor driving habits or extreme use. I used to think the engineers were full of it about torquing lug nuts till a Ford technical trainer proved to me he could warp a rotor 20 thousandths of an inch just by slamming the lugs on with a impact wrench, like most repair shops do.

Go to an auto shop and get them to check out your rotors. If you can get them turned it would be cheaper than buying new ones, but you might need new ones.

It sounds like you need to either replace or have the front rotors turned. they are out of balance. This is not uncommon.
