A good trick to create a swift 318 powered dragster was to get a 904 transmission from a Slant six powered car. The lighter A-904 for a slant six contained a shorter gear ratio for first gear than a v-8 A-904.
This accompanied with a good clutch kit, and manual shifting can easily propel your car.
An A-833 4 speed is excellent but you'd have to go through the gears yourself and prep the motor if it wasn't an automatic V-8. ( 4-speed V-8s have the crankshaft bored to accept the pilot bushing, Plus you'll need to get the pedal setup and clutch, bellhousing, if your 318 car is not standard.)
If you got $$$$ go to Keisler transmissions and get a 5-speed manual or 4 -speed automatic.

Both engines are the same. If you get the standard transmission you get more control over the power band and shifting points. Where an automatic tranny will have preset shift points and less control over when those shifts occur.

The power to the wheels should not change, at least not in a perceptible way. The auto trans is a bit heavier and, depending of your converter, might slip under heavy load. however, shifting can be faster and without hesitation.
