I'm trying to open a credit card gateway account and it's telling me my tax id, which i haven't used in a couple of years, is invalid. I know the numbers are correct, but does a tax id expire after an extended period of non-use?

Yes. Used to work for Verizon wireless and peopl would call to update that element of the acct for bill payment and identity of the account.
I am not a tax expert. Was just a customer service person, but I will say yes.
Hope a more qualified expert also helps you

What tax ID are you using? There are several possible tax IDs if you are running a business. Generally speaking they do not expire at least in the traditional sense.

For an individual your SSN is your tax ID. It never expires though it does become void for further use when you die.

For a business you generally have a Federal EIN and a state EIN. Once you cease your business activity they become invalid for further use though they don't expire.

If your business buys and sells taxable goods, you'll also have a sales tax ID issued by the state. Once you file your final state sales tax return it will be voided out for further use.
