I have 2 cats, clean their litter daily, and use clumping litter. I realize that their urine just stinks from ammonia. I am waiting for some Zero Odor to be delivered--my Vet's office recommended it--but I am not sure that this will solve the smell problem. Has anyone else had this problem and how did you deal with it?

Chlorine bleach neutralizes ammonia.

You say you clean your cats' litter daily, but in fact you don't. You scoop the clumps every day. There is still pee in that litter, and that is what you smell. That is the problem I have with clumping litter. There are stinky little crumbs in it that you just don't get, and the longer they sit, the worse they get. With 2 cats, the problem is worse.

You may not want to change your litter and litter-cleaning protocols. But this is what I do, and other than the delightful bloom of fragrance immediately ensuing after a major production, you absolutely never, ever smell anything.

I use white clay-based litter. If you want to use something like Fresh Step with the little deodorizing green thingies, that works too. Just so long as it is a white clay-based litter. Don't put it too deep in your litter pan, a three-inch depth at the greatest.

When you get up or come home from work, scoop the poop. Then tilt the litter pan so that all the loose, clean litter slides to one side. The stuff that is stuck to the bottom of the pan is the pee-soaked litter. Scoop it out with a non-slotted scoop and toss or flush it.

HERE IS WHERE YOU DEODORIZE. Grab a spray bottle that you have filled with 1-2 parts chlorine bleach (Clorox) to 9 or so parts water, a dilute solution of bleach. While the pan is tilted and the pee litter is pretty well scraped off the bottom, give the exposed surfaces of the pan bottom and sides a good spray. Wipe with a paper towel so that the exposed surfaces of the litter pan are as clean as the day it was born. Give the exposed sides a good spray and wipe, too. Your pee and poop are gone from this half of the pan.

Tilt your pan to the other side, scrape, spray and wipe.

Your pee and poop crumbs and dribbles are gone from this side, and from the whole thing. There is nothing left to stink.

Set your pan flat, and add as much fresh litter to the top as you removed dirty from the bottom of the pan.

I don't care how hot it gets. I don't care how much water fluffy drinks and passes. I don't care whether fluffy is whole or neutered, you will not smell any pee (you may, with a whole male smell that pungent hormonal odor; they exude that), but you will absolutely not smell any latrine odors from your litter pan ever.

With two cats, in really warm weather, I would do it twice a day, but that's just me.

You do not need fancy preparations. You do not need expensive litter. Just a spray bottle with dilute bleach (the cheapest stuff around), paper towels, a non-slotted scoop, plain white clay litter, and 5 minutes.

Please try it. I know you will be pleased.

Good luck.

If mail neuter, otherwise you must simply attend to frequent litter box changes. Some cats will accept "treated" litter, some will not
