My first thought was liquid. It's not something I had thought of until Tuesday of this week after I took my gestational diabetes (diabetes in pregnancy) test. I had had to fast for 12 hours before hand and by the time I took the test it was close to 13. Yikes. Not only was I ravenously hungry, but I was very concerned for my baby too, knoing it had been several hours for her as well. Anyway, I did take a natural PB and grape fruit spread sandwhich on whole wheat with me, but was still very hungry. When I got home I made a smoothie of frozen strawberries and soymilk. While it was good, it didn't do anything to fill my tummy. I did realize that that was good, as it would more quickly digest and get into my bloodstream for the baby.

Liqudy foods also seem to be logical as there is less substance to digest and more liquid that will more easily go through.

If you're looking for something to get your blood sugar going, stick with natural foods. Watermelon is good (and in season so it will be yummy and cheap) because of the liquid and the vitamins (I think Vitamin C is strong in there and lycotene [sp?]; I also recently read somewhere that it retains it's vitamins better if kept at room temp). Oranges, too, though they're not in season so may not be as yummy. Maybe juice, but the whole fruit has more nutrients and less calories.

Anyway, I hope this helps.

Grape juice digests very quickly it is made up of simple sugars.

The fiber in food does not digest at all that is why it is good for regularity.

Proteins and fats take more time to digest than starches and sugars.

The article listed under source is rather technical, however, it is informative.

Grapes--the sugar in them is glucose--the simplest form of sugar. The body does not need to break this down so hits the bloodstream rather immediately.
