Since its warmer now, he wants to go outside. with it. He also wants more privacy with the computer. I have been letting him use the house computer freely, since he was 9. So I have trust, but his older brother (15), keeps looking over his shoulder.
He only goes to the Sega.com Forums and Myspace, maybe.

a 10 yr old should definitely not be using Myspace. I would put controls on the ocmputer to be sure he doesn't ahve access to things that are completely inappropriate for him to even know about, no less ahve complete access to. You need to be monitoring his computer time and what he uses it for, not letting him use it freely at his own discretion. It is potentially very dangerous. I am not at all an overprotective type of parent but, the internet is not for children to just wander around on by themselves. Under no circumstances would I get him a laptop. He doesn't need to use a laptop outside. If he wants to go outside, that's great!! He should be doing outdoor activities outside and not spending time on the computer while the weather is beautiful and he wants to be outside. My daughter is a senior in high school and we will get her her first laptop when she goes to college. My 11 yr old son and daughter use the computer downstairs where we all work together.

A ten year old doesn't need privacy on the computer. He doesn't need to go outside with a computer. He needs to go outside to play and get exercise. limit his computer use.
I think you are asking for trouble giving him free reins on the computer and going to MySpace, which is designed for older teens. Just because you have given him free use of the computer since he was five doesn't mean he should be trusted on the computer. He may be hit on by predators and you don't know it. He is a child, so treat him like one.
My brother completely trusted his sons on the computer, so much so that he let them get on my other brother's computer over Thanksgiving at will. It was discovered later that the boys got on porno sites and my second brother's computer was bombarded with porno spam after that.

Sorry- I'll be blunt:
No- what the hell is wrong with you!!
Sorry- but- you don't need a damn computer at age 10. Tell him tough tittties. MySpace is full of porn and paedophiles anyway. MySpace is a fantastic way for porn sites and webcam/phonesex operators to advertise from- no wonder he wants privacy.
If he says MySpace has no porn- he is either lying or stupid- I'll send you some links myself to prove it most certainly does- all those friends sites do- just email me or ask another question.
Don't let huim get a web-cam- they're 90%+ used for sex f some description- including by paedophiles.
What's wrong with parents these days- afraid to say no?
EDIT: AS for research- honey I've got a masters- everything you need to research is still printed in a book- internet is just a giant crap newspaper. If he wants to research make him go to the library- he will have to anyway if he's going to college/uni- university papers don't allow internet references as primary sources as they are not peer reviewed (online journals are ok because they come out in print form anyway).

Well, I got a laptop when I was 12. I admit that it may take up a bit of your social life, but its very good for school when you need to research something. (That's what I got it for) However, if he's going on Myspace (He's a little young.) and Sega, well then I don't think he really needs a brand new laptop. They're very expensive to begin with and if you have the finances, I would look for a used one on Ebay. A laptop for him may not seem like the best value right now, but it will do him good when he gets older and really needs it.

No. And ALWAYS keep an eye on what he's doing. Have the computer in a public area of your home. It's baloney that he wants more 'privacy'! He shouldn't be on myspace, nor have a myspace account - c'mon MOM!

No. And don't give him any more privacy than he already has, although he is entitled to keep his brother away. Odds are pretty good he'll drop it or break it. Buy him some good books instead. And watch out for myspace. There are some real problems with adult predators on there.

my first thought.... if hes wanting to go outside... why does he want to take a computer out there... (the sun alone could damage it if he isnt careful with it... most 10 year olds will just run at their lesuire and drop what they were doing)... if hes asking for privacy while on the computer i would be wondering what hes getting onto.... and myspace isnt a place for kids at all.... sorry i go on there and in no way shape or form would i let my children get on there....

Buy in the U.S., not China. Look for high positive feedback and high number of sales, as well as highly-rated seller. Check that it is refurbished and how old it is. Any software included. What O.S. and version? Research a consumer website for reviews of used laptops. See what shipping cost is.

MYSPACE! Bad news for kids. I agree with the computer if you can afford it. But it should be used in a public area in the house. NEVER in a child's bed room and NEVER have a web-cam with it.
You can get security software that helps keep him from sites he should not be using. But none of this software is really 100 percent secure.

Ok, if he wants more privacy with the computer, he is up to something. When I was growing up, we had an open door policy at home, never closed our bedroom doors. If he needs the computer for school or games, he doesnt have to hide with it.
