Sometimes it's the small unkindnesses that devastate us, the nasty comment made just to wound, the sneering look, the casual accusations made intending to diminish us.

I see often this kind of questions: is this a sin, it that a sin and so on. But we do not have a list we can check .... except the 10 comandaments..... for example
so ''understanding'' what is a sin and what is not a sin is THE WAY
So I prefer to understand 'karma' which is the low of cause and effect to understand if my action will lead to a good or a bad karma. So we should understand why and not just blindly ask is a sin or not....
I cannot explane in details all the 'category of actions' which lead to a good karma or the opposite, but I can tell you that whatever action cause sofference to others and also to oneself are negative and will have a negative effect so we will be Responsible for that.
Responsibility is also an important word to understand cause and effect of actions.......

To go back to your question now,
try to immagine if the negative intention to act unkindly to others could be an action whicht will have a positive or negative effect......

when we start understanding we do not need anymore to ask others for judgement but we become aware as we are responsible of our own and others sufference or happiness :-)

According to Christian theology, it isn't a sin in itself to be unkind. Certainly it is if the unkindness entailed some sinful act, but unkindness is not a sin. Indeed, unkindness can be helpful to a person if they have erred in some measure. To draw example, one cannot say flooding the Earth was very "kind" of God. Regardless, I believe Christianity and most religious orthodoxies generally encourage people to be kind.

Not necessarily a sin, but a statement made,

Does unkindness define the receiver of the action or the producer.

It depends on the perspective I suppose.

Yes, most definitely.

Not only is it outlined in James, as we've seen from another kind poster, but the entire story of Sodom and Gomorrah was about an entire "unkind" city!

Yes it is. Want proof: "So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin" (James 4:17). James also writes in chapter 2 that if we descriminate against the poor we sin.

Yes

Jesus taught to love one another as I (Jesus) have loved you.
(Love Your neighbor as you love yourself) This was also incorporated into the "Last" commandment given by Him. With that, I would have to assume it goes directly against Christ's teaching and would be a sin.
