Is there a specific format needed to burn DVD's that play in a DVD player?

I've burned DVD's before using iDVD on the Mac OS system, but they don't play in DVD players... The menu plays, but not the movie itself. Is there a specific format the DVD must be in, or is it because of the file type (like AVI, MP4, WMV, ect.)?

All those formats don't matter because they should be Transcoded into a DVD format like .VOB files...If you just burn files like that in that format then they only work on computers....
