Puerto Rico can be a little rough. When you go to the casinos there are guards with machine guns out side guarding the doors. I haven't seen a machine gun at any of the Hawaiian hotels yet and there are many more attractions and things to do in Hawaii. here are some of them!

The cool thing about Oahu is that there is everything to do. You can go to Waikiki and take a catamaran booze Cruise for $10.00 all you can drink. Great surfing and diving all over the island. Sea Plane and glider flights at reasonable prices. Hit the north shore and the Halieva area and see some of the best waves in the world. and if its flat the fishing and snorkeling is spectacular. There are water falls, parks, concerts, an amazing area of Strip clubs. (not to my taste but available) and try Dukes for cocktails at Waikiki on Sunday afternoon. beautiful people watching. Go to the Hawaii Yacht club on Friday night and ask for a ride on one of the big sailboats for the beer can races. Have Lunch at tropical licks. Its a cart by the Chart House that serves some the best tacos in the world. Tell Jim that Randy said Hi. The list goes on and on. Absolutely one of the best vacations in the world. I am envious. It will be awhile before I get back there.

PS there is a great old restaurant on Sand Island. La Mariana in Hawaii. There is this Great Tiki bar on Sand Island and it might be the last Real Tiki bar in the Islands. Sand Island is kind of Isolated and La Mariana serves a small Yacht club there. The Place is all Bamboo and blown up Puffer fish. Georgeous waitresses and the old Lady that owns the place comes down once a night and greets her guests. The food is just spectacular. With thick and hot Juicy steaks, Ice cold beer and great cocktails.. There is a small piano bar and I swear that the same guy has been playing that piano for thirty years. The place was built at the beginning of WW2 and really hasn't changed that much. The old Bamboo has a kind of inner glow that only comes with age and care. Its really great. Most tourists never find it cause its off the beaten track. Check it out. You won't regret it and the price is right.

Well I live in PR and planning on moving to Hawaii in the next year lol! Hawaii is definetly more expensive and clean. Puerto Rico is not cheap but moderate-high and the infrastructure doesn't seem to be that clean. The islands are very similar in natural attractions(beautiful beaches, rainforests, restaurants...) If you like to see cultural attractions Puerto Rico has spanish colonial era and Hawaii has polinesian arquitecture and history.

Both are US territory/state so you don't need US Passport(If coming from the mainland).

If you plan to come to PR be sure to visit:
1. El Yunque Rainforest
2. Arecibo Observatory
3. Moskito Bay in Vieques (Bioluminicent Bay)
4. Flamenco Beach in Culebra
5. The lighthouses
6. Old San Juan

Hawaii is very expensive. So if you have the money, go there. But Puerto Rico is good too.

I agree with traveler.....I live in Hawaii as well. There are tons of things to do on the island of Oahu. But for the love of God, get a car and get out of Waikiki. Maybe stay there for a couple of days if you like the night life scene. But there are tons of places to stay on other parts of the island. Google in bed and breakfasts on Kailua and Lanikai. Best beaches are on that side of the island. And whatever you do try a plate lunch. L & L is ono (good).
