As maybe followers of the high-definition formats will know, Pioneer are releasing a blu-ray drive at around $299. It only reads, and does not write blu-ray disks.

My question is, firstly, would I need a HD monitor, or are most LCD monitors these day HD anyway? And secondly, if the monitor can handle HD and blu-ray movies, then what is the point in buying a drive. I could just download HD/blu-ray movies. Obviously, wouldn't be legal, but we don't care about that, the greedy bastards charge enough for the disks as it is.

To play full-HD you will need an HD TV or monitor with both HDMI and HDCP (copy protection..)
Blu-Ray or HD players will not output at HD resolution without an HDMI.

You don't have to buy the discs. You can always rent....

You'd have to have a pretty stout video card to play most HD movies.
I'm putting a link in the sources box for you to download some HD content. See if your video card can handle them.

To answer your question, blu-ray movies don't just look better, they have INCREDIBLE sound. If you're not watching at 1080p (1920 x 1080 resolution) with a nice surround sound system, you're really missing out.
If you're not going to get the proper setup, just stick with DVD.
