I am not quite sure the detailed meaning of tempered. Does it mean layered? Does it mean it can withhold a certain degree of heat or cold? Are there different amounts of temperament?

No, they are not. Tempered glass is not layers or laminated. Tempered glass is made by taking formed glass (like a car or bathroom window) at about 900F and blasting it with cold air to rapidly chill it, which puts the outside under tension and the inside under compression. This makes the glass more break resistant blunt blows - "stronger". It also means that if the glass is scratched or punctured it shatters into thousands of uniform pieces like small cubes which do not contain sharp points and therefore will not slash people. If you have ever seen sparkling glass over several square feet in the street, you have seen tempered glass from a car window that has been broken by a thief or by accident.
Take a Corona bottle, protect your eyes, perhaps wrap it in a towel, put it on a hard surface like concrete and hit it with a hammer. You will have sharply pointed pieces, not the little cubes of tempered glass.

I live in Florida and I happen to know if you leave a Corona in the sun on the sidewalk, it will not explode, and will taste just as good after being thrown in the fridge with a lemon. I wonder how many people even think about the glass, other than to avoid smashing it as they are moving about.
