Ask your vet. NEVER give a dog human perscribed medication because some human meds can be very toxic & deadly to dogs!!! True they can take some human meds, but ask the vet before hand. Better to be safe than sorry later on!!!

Dogs have been travelling for years without drugs with no problems. You are just projecting your own anxieties onto the dog: you take the vallium if you must and leave the dog alone. Animals do not need human medication and should never under any circumstances be given it. This is an immoral and dangerous new industry, which is being pushed because it is extremely lucrative to the pharmaceutical companies, that needs to be stamped out.

No, No. Just put her favorite toys with the pet and 1/2 of a travel sickness tablet, as its their tummy feeling upset that makes them nervous and you know its hard to relax if you think you are going to vomit any minute soon. Don't feed for at least 3 hours before starting the journey and I leave ice instead of water for them to have when thirsty. The dogs usually start playing with the fancy shaped ice cubes I have made before we leave and that helps relax them alot. I also stop once every hour just in case its bathroom time. You won't waste a lot of time I find since the dogs tend to relieve them selves almost right away if need be and on the road again soon after the sqwart. These are my precious Poms I am learning from as they travel with me lots and many hours at a time. The most interesting feature on one of our trips was that Charo climbed a long way up the snow filled mountain side road where we had made a pit spot from before in the fall but with the snow now in place at winter time she climbed in the snow to get where she had gone before and the car could n ot travel since the snow was too deep and she knew that place and makes it through the snow each and every time to the almost orginal spot each and every time now when I stop there/ Who said dogs aren't smart. They are so smart with that keen sense of smell they have deloveped and use it when ever possible I have found. Please, no valiaum. A lot of hugs and attention will go a long way in keeping them relaxed.

Ask your vet! You don't want to accidentally kill your dog. This is not something you guess about. You can use Rescue Remedy you can get that at any health food store and you dog won't OD on it and it will relax your dog safely. All the best;^)

There are much better ways to relax your dog while traveling then giving her drugs.
My vet gave us a herbal remedy that just relaxes them so that they aren't as high strung and just mellow right out. It works well with seperation anxiety too, which is exactly why we have it. Just a few drops in the mouth and you are good to go.

Im not too sure you should give human sedatives to pets....go to your vet or call them & they can prescribe you a sedative that will be very safe & effective for your individual dog.....they will also be able to tell you how long it will be effective
If you want to try a different route...buy baby sedatives at you local pharmace, they are made fro smaller sized bodies & are much gentler & safer...you can just put a vial in your pooches water or on her fod & it helps imensley..I use it when I have to bathe my cat

Don't think you can....Vet can give (or tell) you something that's safe for your dog to take while traveling. Some drugs for humans are toxic to dogs!
You forgot to use spell check!

Ask your vet! If the dog is flying on a plane, most airlines will NOT ship a drugged dog, it's not safe. If for a road trip or whatnot....ask your vet...they will provide you a proper prescription for your dog.

2 to 5 mgs.should relax her enough.Valium is a very safe drug for dogs and cats.My dog took injectable valium for years for epilepsy. She would take 400 mg. of Phenobarbital per day,and 20 mg of injectable Valium when she had a bad seizure. One of my cats takes it for bladder spasms. He weighs about 14 lbs.and takes 2 mgs.,twice a day. Be aware, though, that in some dogs,Valium can have the opposite effect of causing hyperactivity,so you should try it on her first,at home,to see how she reacts to it.
Update: For all of you naysayers who think Valium is poison to dogs or something, there is no way I would tell someone to give their dog a drug that wasn't safe.My vet routinely prescribes it for many anxiety and phobia disorders in dogs and cats. Also, here is the link to another dog and Valium question. So,stop giving me thumbs down! I know what I'm talking about!
