Excerpt from United States Gun Control act of 1968
18 USC 921 (a)(16). (A) any firearm (including any firearm with a matchlock, flintlock, percussion cap, or similar type of ignition system) manufactured in or before 1898; and (B) any replica of any firearm described in subparagraph (A) if such replica -- (i) is not designed or redesigned for using rimfire or conventional centerfire fixed ammunition, or (ii) uses rimfire or conventional centerfire fixed ammunition which is no longer manufactured in the United States and which is not readily available in the ordinary channels of commercial trade.
basically says that if any firearm was made before 1898 then you adont need a federal liscense to buy it.

You can buy any rifle or shotgun, but you can't buy pistols or fully automatics.
For full autos you need an FFL which you have to be 21 or older to apply for.
Also you State laws apply for instance you can buy a Bushmaster Carbine in most states when your 18, but in California and a few other states you can't own one at all.

Here's the law, and that is that.
The only people that try to argue the law are ignorant of the law.
18 to buy any gun. However, at 18 handguns MUST, I repeat MUST, be bought from an unlicensed dealer (eg at a gun show, from a classified ad, from a private individual). Actually, that's how the 18-yo Columbine shooters bought their pistols. From a gun show. 18 is the age to buy any gun from an UNlicensed dealer.
Now, federally licensed firearms dealers (eg, any local gun shop or gun store) can only sell you a rifle/shotgun at 18, you must be 21 for a handgun.
P.S. INDIVIDUAL STATES MAY RESTRICT PRIVATE HANDGUN PURCHASES TO 21-YEARS-OF-AGE. YOU MUST CHECK WITH YOUR STATE AND LOCAL LAWS BEFOREHAND, NOT AFTER-THE-FACT. FEDERAL LAW IS 18 FOR HANDGUNS FROM UNLICENSED DEALERS.

Rifles and shotguns for 18 year olds. And you can only buy rifle/shotgun ammo. So if you buy a rifle that shoots pistol caliber (lever action, for example) than you need to get a parent or guardian to buy the shells.

NONE. You can't buy a gun till you're 21, and when you turn 21, tell yourself you can't buy one till you're 31, and so on. Buy a couple of German Shepherds, noone will get past them, they are too fast!
