I have searched high and low, and cannot find anything. Short of cutting one open, which I'm about to do if someone here can't save me the trouble, what type of liquid is in them?

I assume it has additives (because if it was pure water, they would expand, and probably crack the plastic container it's in)

I assume those additives are food safe.

I researched it & I found this at www.Howstuffworks.com :

The liquid inside the cold pack is water. In the water is another plastic bag or tube containing ammonium-nitrate fertilizer. When you hit the cold pack, it breaks the tube so that the water mixes with the fertilizer. This mixture creates an endothermic reaction -- it absorbs heat. The temperature of the solution falls to about 35 F for 10 to 15 minutes.
