I need to quit my job--- suddenly. What are some excuses I could tell him? I am a young male in my early 20's... but I don't want my boss to hate me or be upset. I thought of a broken leg... but that would require quite a lot of acting and he is the kind of boss who likes to ask questions...

Thanks!!

here's a novel idea, why don't you tell him the truth?

You don't say why you 'need to quit' your job. The professional way to do it is to give your boss a handwritten or typed letter of resignation. (fax or email if you have, indeed, quit without notice - a bad policy).

You do not need to put any reason - really, why do you think the boss would even care?
You simply say that you regret having to resign and if you feel compelled to say anything as explanation, just say, "Due to personal circumstances" you must give immediate notice or two week notice.

I would put a sentence or two saying it has been your pleasure to serve the company and you appreciate the opportunity of working with him/her (the boss).

There is *never* a need to go in to personal matters in the workplace. It is actually very unprofessional to do so.

If your boss questions you, I would thank him/her for being concerned and simply say you have had some urgent personal things come up that require your immediate attention. Then move on and thank her/him for everything that's been done for you and end the conversation or change the subject.

Good luck.

Note: If you have another job, any good company will appreciate your being decent enough to give a fair notice to your present company - as they would and will expect the same. Unless this is, truly, a family emergency, there is no excuse for not giving a fair notice - usually two weeks.

Why lie? Tell your boss the truth. Lying is a sin and why would you do that? Be a man and face up to the reasons why you are leaving. Why act like a child and lie? Come on, a broken leg how childish and lame. Get a life and quit. Stop worrying about it and just do it. The more you come up with excuses the more it will come back and haunt you. It sounds to me like you are sixteen and not in your twenty's.

If you want to keep the relationship and need a referral, the truth is best. Even if its because you are getting another job. Employers respect when you need to leave to further yourself. You cant use the broken leg thing cause then you are eligible for Disability and then he would require a doctors note and stuff and he will know you are lying. Tell him the truth and you dont have to figure out how to answer his neverending questions.

I am leaving my job, but I will have time to give notice. I am telling her a better opportunity has come up, and I needed a straight shift, and full time.
It happens to be the truth.
You could say a better opportunity came up suddenly, and you could not pass it up. Apologize for the hasty exit, and thank them for the employment they gave you. Doing the polite thing will help, your boss might still hate you, and be upset, but the least he could say was that you were polite while leaving. You may some day need him for a job reference!

Don't make excuses, just say something along the line of, "Thanks for the opportunity to work here, but something's some up and I need to quit soon."
