For me:
Thumbs up if they answered the question well and didn't try to be a schmuck. (Even if I disagree with the answer).
Thumbs down if they didn't accurately answer the question or they're just being a schmuck.
Automatic thumbs up from me if I read your answer and it made me actually laugh. No matter HOW well the question was answered or whether I agree/disagree with what you said.
I don't always rate.
So...yeah. There ya go.

I base my votes on what the person writes and the explanation that the person gives. If someone said "God doesn't exist because he doesn't: then they wouldn't get my vote but if they argued against my belief but made a genuine attempt at explaining why they believed that then they would get my vote. I see this YA as a place where we learn about each other’s beliefs and I hope that people will at least try to justify their beliefs. If they don't then why are they here? I think its important to answer questions with scripture but more importantly to explain why the answer should be considered and hopefully use other sources or at least a logical attempt as to why the scripture should be considered. I don’t think the “God is real because the Bible is the Word of God and the Bible says God’s real” argument is a good one. But the other problem is that I doubt most people would check sources to verify the information that is given which is why there seems to be a lot of Creation Vs Evolution questions on YA.

No, I rate answers based on how a writer addressed the question asked, how the writer thinks through the issues, and how the writer supports her points with facts from the physical world and words from holy books. I appreciate those informed from both a physical/material perspective and a spiritual perspective. To me, they are two ways of looking at reality. I don't care from which religious tradition they come as long as that part is insightful and relevant.

I only give thumbs down on answers that don't actually answer the question, that use it as an opportunity to put another religion down or spread misinformation about another religion, or those which are taking it as an opportunity to be openly hostile rather than make a point.

I think Yahoo calls them "Best Answer" not the most fact based answer for a reason. Sometimes "facts" are not agreed upon.

Okay techinically thats how we should all be rating!
We should be asking ourselves: "Was it a well thought out answer, would the questioner have found it helpful?", etc. NOT "Did I personally like or agree with the answer so and so gave."!!!!!!!!
And yes I do try my hardest to do that. But I have a feeling Many people don't.

God is alive and working in my life and the lives of believer's around me. That is a fact, but I guess it depends on what your definition of a fact is.
