If you want to get an SUV, I'd recommend you go lower end for a first vehicle. Get a Trailblazer, or a Yukon.
Personally, I'd recommend getting a larger vehicle to learn on. If you can learn to drive something the size of a small bus, then you won't have trouble switching to other vehicles. If you only drive small cars early on, you may find big vehicles intimidating.
But remember, your first car will likely not last very long. Not that you'll destroy it, but your taste in vehicles will change as you start to drive more and want to do different things. So don't go overboard on the first one, that way you have a better chance of negotiating a second one later. Also, you're quite likely going to get into an accident or two, so don't ding up a really nice car if you don't have to.

An SUV is not a good choice for inexperienced drivers. You may think you know how to drive, but you don't have the experience to know how to handle a top-heavy vehicle in an emergency situation. Insurance companies know this, which will make for high premiums.
Go for something like the ever-popular Honda Civic. It's a great car that is economical to drive and insure, looks good, has good performance, and is reliable. The two SUVs you mentioned are notoriously unreliable.

I too am filthy rich and find myself faced with similar dilemmas on a nearly daily basis. Which solid gold faucets should I have custom built, which type of elephant I want flown in for my zoo, and which type of automobile should I special order today??? Well, definitely do not go with the Hummer, how vulgar! Nor do I find the new Range Rover LR3 particularly compelling. The Mercedes G-Class does have its merits. http://www.mbusa.com/models/class-overview.do?modelCode=g_class_main But I think what you really want is something custom, and this may very well fit the bill: http://www.salemkroger.com/vans.html

Nice to have a dad with tons of cash...
You're better off with a mid-size car while still developing your driving skills. Something the size of the Ford Taurus....
The smaller vehicle will be easier to handle and you'll be less likely to accidentally back into stuff. The big SUV's have lots of "blind spots"
Note that SUV's and vans are the vehicles most often involved when parents accidentally back a vehicle over their own kid.

Out of those 2, i would get a hummer just bc its a chick magnet and has a lot of power. but i would prefer something like a midsize or small car bc they are easier to handle, and generally faster. out of all the cars, probably a chevrolet corvette convertible, or a ford mustang. try not to get something like a 4 cylinder bc they have virtually no power, but r good on gas though. there r pros and cons to everything, but i would rather have power over gas millage.
oh and i would get a manual or at least learn how to drive one so you will not be limited to automatic (bc in my opinion, they suck) well good luck.

How old are you and how rich is your dad? If you can afford those go for it!! First car I'd think more along the lines of something cheaper. Something that doesn't consume a lot of gas.

i suggest you go buy your own with your own hard earned money and you will take care of it alot better because you had to earn it. tell you dad to keep his money and go buy himself a new car. eventually you will find that money doesnt by independence or respect.
