I've run out of the prescribed "Doggie Painkillers" and am wondering if there's anything I can do for him. He weighs 84 pounds and has a strained ligament in his rear right leg. And please, I know the obvious answer is to go to the vet and get more, but I won't have a chance for a while...

What is safe for people, may not be safe for dogs. Most human medications, have the potential to cause severe problems. Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Naproxen, and Aspirin, are common anti-inflammatory drugs, that can cause disease in dogs, even in small doses. To avoid an emergency situation, make sure ALL drugs are kept out of reach. Never give a dog any kind of human medication, unless it's under a veterinarians supervision, or unless the vet tells you to do so. Giving the wrong medication or the wrong dosage, can seriously harm or kill your dog. I would call your vet and tell him what your situation is, and see if maybe he can refill the prescribed medication that he gave your dog, or recommend something that is safe to give him and the proper dosage. I would never take that chance with any of my dogs! It's alway's better to be safe than sorry!

Do NOT EVER give Tylenol or Ibuprofen to a dog!!! It is toxic.

As for asprin while considered safe for most dogs do NOT give it without advisement from your vet and in the proper dosage your vet recommends. There are some dogs that should not receive asprin.

Ok...so of course the official reccomendation is to consult your vet.

Now...the actual answer is you CAN give a regular sized aspirin (325 mg) twice daily. This of course is unofficial advice...I am not a doctor. ( A baby aspirin (80 mg) wouldn't do anything for your dog.) Be aware that they should be buffered (have a protective coating). Aspirin can cause stomach ulcers and bleeding (it thins the blood) Let your vet know he's taking aspirin, and I wouldn't use it as a long term treatment.

Tylenol is kind of controvercial, and is VERY toxic to cats. I wouldn't suggest it.

Advil and Aleve...ect is not safe for dogs.

Call the vet just to get a precise dosage, but baby aspirin is ok.

Some people here giving answers, don't know what they're talking about!

Absolutely, NO Tylenol NOR Ibuprofen to a dog, NEVER!

Plain Aspirin only. Per your dog's weight, give a 325mg. twice a day.

No tylenol or ibuprofen...humans drugs for the most part should never be given to dogs unless a vet had told you to give it.. most human drugs are poisonous to animals and can result in death. You CAN safely give your dog asprin...but it should be buffered...such as "bufferin".

I think that you can give your dog tylenol but I wouldn't without speaking to your vet first. Can you call the vet, or maybe an emergency clinic?

Otherwise, a heat pack helps sometimes, alternated with cold packs (but be sure to put a towel between the pack and your dog's body).
