If your sock drawer has 6 black socks, 4 brown socks, 8 white socks, and 2 tan socks, how many socks would you have to pull out in the dark to be sure you had a matching pair?

Five

But if you had already bundled them into matching pairs, you'd just have to take out 2 - one pair. Otherwise, if they were all single socks randomly in a drawer, you'd have to pull out 5 socks, one more than the number of colors. Reason: in the "worst possible" case, you could pull out a black one, then a brown one, then a white one, then a tan one, but the next one you pulled out would have to be a match.

If you are very lucky, you can get a matching after after puling out just two. If you're unlucky, you must pull out 5 because you will have one sock of each type + another sock which has to match at least one of the other 4 you pulled out.

Least risk if you pull out 5, though.

Let's see. 20 socks. To get two whites, the odds are good for a pair--8/20. With four colors, that would make a match after five tries.

the answer depends on what color sock you pull out.
If you pulled out the tan one first then you could end up pulling 18 other ones before you find the matching tan. If you pulled the black one first you could end up pulling 14 others before you may end up with the matching black. If you pulled the brown one first then you could end up pulling 16 other socks before you get the matching brown one. And finally if you pulled the white one first you could end up pulling 12 other ones before you get the matching white one. however I roll my socks together so I do not have trouble matching my socks.

tie them together in a pair before keeping in the drawer. it will be very convenient in dark.
there are five color socks so if you take out four socks of different the fifth has to match with any color.so you have to remove at the most 5 socks and least is 2

If you had your socks folded you would only have to pull out once because you would have a pair put together already.
