He always says that he doesn't like having pets. I convinced him into letting me adopt my cat from the pound saying that if we didn't adopt her she was going to be put down that night and it would be all his fault. Anyway he never says anything sweet about her but sometimes when he comes home from work he doesn't come in straight away. When I look out the window he is patting the cat. Why does he behave this way?

Could be an ole softy on the inside while trying to maintain his tough guy image? Or he could not want to admit that you were right by getting this kitty? He could be falling in love with the kitty and doesn't want to admit it or afraid that you will do the 'I told you so' routine, or pick on him?

He sounds just like my father. My Dad is always telling my mother to get rid of the dog and cat they are too much trouble for what they are worth. The truth is that we all have caught him petting both animals and he plays with both animals all the time.

He seems to think that if people knew he liked them they would think he was a less manly. The truth is we all know a man who can show love and compassion is a real man, who would want an insensitive pig?

Obviously he and the cat are having an affair. Sorry, couldn't resist that one. Most likely someone in his past, probably his dad or another male authority figure told him that men shouldn't like cats because it's feminine or some such crap. Just be glad that he actually likes the cat, don't call him on it, or he just might ignore the cat completely from then on and he and the cat will lose out.

If he is "patting" the cat, I believe he is really wanting a dog. Men pat dogs, not cats. Now if he is rubbing the cats furs, then he must like the cat. (even if it's not as "manly" to like cats.... BTW my family has 4 dogs, 3 cats, 1 horse and over 25 chickens)

hahaha my stepdad when we first moved in with him said h was allergic to cats, well h let us get 1 and he always said he was allergic but loved that cat and pet it all the time. Then we came home with cat #2 and he said "im allergic we cant have another one" he was still fine and loved the cat but he hated to come home and see them in his bed with my mom he would say im allegic but then we would go out at night and he would be sleeping in the livingroom with the cat on his belly. then cat #3 same story it was classic, but he loved those cats!!

He don't want you to know that he cares for the cat and he is now excepting the cat as part of the family in his own way.

A lot of guys think it's not cool to like cats. But most guys who have one, or a girlfriend/wife who has one, come to realize that cats are cool. They won't admit it, though. It offends some (not all) guys' egos to admit they like cats. I'm always impressed by a guy who will acknowledge cats are worthwhile.

Maybe if he tells you that he enjoys having the cat then you'll prove him wrong. Some men can't admit when the been wrong about things so maybe in his own way he's giving the cat his approval.

Like all us men, we have a tough image to maintain. We'll pat the cat when you're not looking. ( Hey don't complain, at least he's patting the cat, right? )
