This is just an assumption really...but I've always got the idea that their 2 year mission, everyday they are out there ringing doorbells. So they put off college until their mission is finished? Do they get jobs? How do they support themselves cause a full-time job wouldn't leave you much time for spreading your word and stuff, yeah?

I'm just curious on this aspect. If anyone can enlighten or correct me, I would appreciate it :)

Their families pay a monthly fee for them to go, others save the money to pay their own way. Then they get jobs to pay for school when they are done.

They don't do any other work while on their missions.

My parents paid for me to go. It is quite costly- ten years ago it was about $350. a month. It is paid into a general mission fund. If someone cannot pay it, or needs assistance, the church will help them cover the costs. Many members will give money to the mission fund to help those who need assistance. The church recommends that missionaries pay as much as possible for themselves. I have nephews who have saved for years who paid it all themselves.

Most missionaries take a break from college to go at the age of 19. It depends on what the young men or women want to do. My niece took a break from BYU to serve her 18 month mission & is going back this fall.
Once you are out in the mission field, you are given an allowance every 2 weeks to get the things you need. It isn't very much- just covers your basic needs. Rent, phone bills & things like this are paid by the mission office so the missionary doesn't have to be concerned about it. My parents sent me a extra money every month because I tend to spend a lot of money. It was nice that they did- I was very spoiled & lucky.

Young men (and women) are encouraged to start saving at a very young age to save for their missions. There is even a song they learn titled "I Hope They Call Me on a Mission". However, if the family is poor, there are usually other members willing to help support the missionary. Not to mention the fact that regardless of the missionary's ability to pay for room and board, the money is sent to them every month from our Church Headquarters.

As for college, many times it is started prior to their missions and completed after.

It isn't just young people. Senior sisters and couples can also serve missions. They must pay a portion of the expense as well.

Since it costs more to house missionaries in London or Tokyo than in Nigeria or Honduras, the church evens out the cost.

We're encouraged to save up. I've been saving 40% of my allowances for it just like a lot of people toward college funds. They have a standard average that is around $400 a month ( I think) because if you're sent to Japan you might need a lot more for appartments and stuff than if you were sent to a third world country. They just take a break from college, like if the play sports, they don't lose years of eligibility, they're just older juniors and seniors than everybody else.

They go to college after their missions. Most mormons pay for their missions either partially or fully by themselves, with money they saved up for a long time. I used to be mormon and I knew some mormon guys sold their cars or other valuable possesions to be able to afford to go on a mission. Which just shows how dedicated they are- I think its admirable. You gotta respect them for that, even if you don't agree with their beliefs
And members of the church help out by inviting them to dinner all the time

They save up for their entire lives, for the most part, and get by on very little money while on their missions. They are often fed by members of their church and yes, they do put off college. It's just two years, not a lifetime.

I think they are rich and they don't have to worry about money. By the way I think they are annoying, they consider themselves Christians but they are not.
