Maybe they like sports and are good at it. As for thanking God, they just acknowledge the real giver of their talent.

Hi KJ,
I've wondered that as well. It is saddening that Pro athletes have forsaken their humanity by devaluing their own contributions, hard work and sacrifice that earned them their success and instead choose to attribute it to some mythical entity.
It is also a little pompous and arrogant for a believer to assume the Almighty, Creator of the Universe - who is impotent to solve wars, starvation and disease - would concern himself with whether one of his creatures wins a sporting competition! (Didn't the ancient Greek Olympians pray to the Gods of Olympus for the same thing?)
Man is a marvelous curiosity...he thinks he is the Creator's pet...he even believes the Creator loves him; has passion for him; sits up nights to admire him; yes and watch over him and keep him out of trouble. He prays to him and thinks he listens. Isn't it a quaint idea.
– Mark Twain
I once heard the survivors of a colony of ants that had been partially obliterated by a cow's foot seriously debating the intention of the gods towards their civilization
— Don Marquis
The idea of an incarnation of God is absurd: why should the human race think itself so superior to bees, ants, and elephants as to be put in this unique relation to its maker? . . Christians are like a council of frogs in a marsh or a synod of worms on a dung-hill croaking and squeaking “for our sakes was the world created.”
— Julian The Apostate
There is something feeble and a little contemptible about a man who cannot face the perils of life without the help of comfortable myths. Almost inevitably some part of him is aware that they are myths and that he believes them only because they are comforting. But he dares not face this thought! Moreover, since he is aware, however dimly, that his opinions are not rational, he becomes furious when they are disputed.

It's probably more of a phony publicity stunt than anything else. If they are being serious, they believe that the supposed creator of the universe, somebody has designed every single atom of the galaxy, and created and used the complex process of Evolution to design life, is interested and influences in a sports game. At any rate, considering that most of America IS Christian, the majority of sports players are going to be Christian.

Well simply look at MTV music video awards. Someone's video has them having sex with three girls at a time then they get on stage and say, "I thank all my fans for this, my thanks to God"... I don't know why they do that.
But as for sports, many of them learn about discipline and respect which are inherent in religious lifestyle. Maybe there are parallels between the coach/team and God/believers..... God/coach makes the plans, players/believers follow up, if they do well they succeed, if they fail they piss off the coach and may get cut.

The ability to go to the level of play that they have achieved is rare and they understand that it is a gift of God to have the physical attributes to have gotten to where they are. I would rather see that then more arrogance from professional players.

Both teams will pray before a game.
So what ever team has the most faith, god will let them win?
