I started trying to learn to play guitar today, I borrowed a friends and started off by trying to play twinkle twinkle little star (Don't laugh) lol I can ALMOST successfully play it but I feel like I should be able to play it without any problems. I was wondering if anyone would have any tips on learning to play and are there any popular songs that would be fairly simple?? Nursery rhymes aren't exactly what I was goin for lol

I started by picking an easy song I liked. For me it was "Leaving on a Jet Plane" Only three chords and I played it in the key of D. (The easiest by far) I played it over and over and over again, until I got it, then the second song was easier. I used the simple strumming pattern of "down, down up, up down up" with my right hand which will get you through a lot of songs. Once you have the chords and strumming down, then you can go on to playing a melody with the left and learning different picking patterns with the right. Good luck!

TEN TIPS TO BETTER GUITAR PLAYING

1. Practice slow and maintain control
2. Keep hands and strings clean
3. Learn chords first, runs second, leading third
4. Learn to read music in the treble clef
5. Research basic music theory
6. Maintain a clean instrument
7. Change strings often
8. Observe other guitarists-styles and delivery
9. Develop your own style
10. Remain open to suggestions on better playing

Apparently, the word 'tabs' refer to chords, which is something new to me. I call a chord a chord and tabs are usually associated with tablature, a different type of notation.

Find songs you enjoy that have three or four chords.

My very first song, other than "Guitar Boogie," was to sing the old country tune, "In the Pines" in the key of C. I still use it when working with my students.

How long it takes to learn guitar depends on how good you want to get and how much practice you put in. How good you can get with 1-2 hours a day for a few months depends on what methods you use to practice. There are effective practice methods that will help you make the best use of your time. This course is one of the best. https://bitly.im/aMDN7 It's not just about how much you play but how effectively you play that will determine how good you will get.

first off, good for you for learning to play the guitar. im not going to lie, it is harder than it looks, so dont be intimidated by your first day. some tips:

*take it slowly and re-practice what you have over and over until you are very comfortable and know it by heart, mussle memory is a big part of guitar.

*beatles (or pretty much any 50's to 60's music) fan or not, try looking up tabs for there songs. good ones are "with a little help from my friends" "la bamba" CCR is easy....oldies are usually fun and easy...

*have fun and stick with it, its alot of practice, but the goal is well worth it. (plus chicks really dig it)
