I believe what he tells me about my car. He is a great guy. He believes what I tell him when we go whitewater rafting and his life is in my hands.

I won't trust a mechanic's information just like that, but if what he says always make sense and he does good work again and again then I may give him more trust over time.
Some mechanics are full of doggie doodoo but there are some that are naturally honest and believe in good works.
However the honest ones usually charges more for the same amount of labor. Most of the time you get what you pay, I would think.

She wouldn't be my mechanic if I didn't trust her somewhat, but the trust is limited. She has had training, she's done a good job in the past, she hasn't appeared greedy or overreaching. She knows a lot more about cars than I do. So I put provisional trust in her.
But trust is only as good as the latest info. If I hear she's defrauded others, I will trust her a lot less. If she gives me advice that proves obviously wrong I will trust her less. If she starts giving opinions that seem based on something other than her training in actually fixing physical problems with cars then on those things I am unlikely to trust her. For instance, if she tells me that my car is suffering emotional harm from my failure to use her special mix of frankincense based air freshener then that goes against my experience and study in life and doesn't seem based on any objective reality, so I am not going to buy it.

Actually, my mechanic believes in me; he believes that for what I'm paying him to do the job right, that if he doesn't, he's not going to get paid. He further believes (knows) that if he mounts a protest, he'll get my foot up his a*ss. It's a very clear relationship.

Well,Wayne,I have an unfair advantage,as I have been a Ford parts counter man for many years....I know the technicians real well and even know the part numbers for the parts that they "say" need to be installed.....Tell Bobby the truth guys about my car...or maybe we will be "out" of the turbo-charger that you need so desperately for another job.....
.....they usually take real good care of us......or else.
.....boy do I have a lot of numbers in my head...sheesh.
