I have a yellow lab he is just a year. He has these "hot spots" on both his elbows. What causes this? And is there anything I can give him to make it go away.

Thank you!

labs are labs. they will always have a skin issue or an ear issue. Hot spots are pretty much from them scratching, the hotspot itself is a secondary infection. they start scratching at an area and keep going. Needs to be treated with antibiotics and kept clean. if you're lucky, a vet hospital may give you some chlorihexadine solution with gauze to keep it clean. you can also use topical triple antibiotic, but only as an extra. this alone will NOT clear it. keep him from licking too.

hot spots are usually a sign of allergy. To treat it you can shave the area down to the skin and put bag balm on it, you can get bag balm at an animal feed store and some drug stores carry it. Wonderful stuff. But if you don't treat the allergy they will keep coming back. have the dog allergy tested and go with shots if necessary, if its allergies and left untreated the skin issues will spread, the ears will close up and its much easier to prevent a flare up from allergies than to treat it after its full blown

If it looks kind of dry and rough on the elbows, it's just a common callous. Don't worry. If it is something red and wet/oozy looking it could be a hot spot (but elbows would be a weird place for one, and I doubt both elbows would be involved).

you can go to the pet store get apple bitter (something dog's don't like) and spray the hot spots it doesn't hurt they don't bite much , but after a hour or so spray it again. :)

those are not hot spots, they are callouses, probably from laying on a hard surface
