Issued and then they go out and buy the knives they need. Don't take them to Basic though. You can't have anything not issued or on the list.

Sadly Marines are NOT issued Ka-Bar knives. There are groups of Marines that are issued knive however, they are usually in the high-speed-low-drag "jobs". Folding knives and Ka-bars are allowed in the barracks depending on the command. Usually anything with a blade longer than three inches is not allowed.

a-Bars are not "issued" anymore; they are more of a personal purchase item; Marines in Rifle Companies carry the OKC3S Bayonet, which is the newly issued bayonet for the Marines; other Marines in mom-Infantry duties, carry the older, but still effective M7 bayonet, which is from the Vietnam era, I might even go on a limb to say that the M7 was replaced by the M9 while the OKC3S is the new infantry bayonet for the Corps.
Bades are common in the barracks, you can buy them at the PX or order them through catalogs and online, most een have several to suit specific requirements.

Marines are now issued a CFK or Combat Fighting Knife. It is stored in the armory, because it is issued gear. You are allowed, depending on the command, to have knives. Yes, they normally have to be within regulations. nothing too big.

Get your blood stripe and you can buy a really long blade to keep with you, it's called a sword and it is one beautiful sword. As for the small blades, it's been 30 years sense I've been in the Marines and many things have changed, I didn't keep up with most of it but that Marine Corps sword is SWEET! I like the enlisted sword even more than the officer's sword.
I collect swords thanks to my USMC sword.

An infantry soldier will also be issued a bayonet, a fixed-blade knife of 10-12 inches in length.
In basic training, all you will be allowed to have is a toothbrush. And it better be green.

I just find it funny and stupid at the same time that many civilians walking the streets are better armed at all times than most military personal are while on base or in uniform walking the streets and engaged in a battle.
You'd think as someone who's job to protect our nation, they'd be armed 24/7 anywhere they went.
