i am only 16, am a responsible shooter and member of 4h shooting sports, the ATA, and have completed my hunter safety course, so i do know of the dangers of firearms. i wanted to start carrying a concealed weapon for when i work and other times in MD. im planning on getting a pistol soon("getting" meaning my father purchasing it and letting me use it but its still my money), to shoot in IPSC also. so i was just wondering what the age is, because ive heard of some kids my age being able to.

The law is the law, and people here love to argue laws written in black and white.

18 in most states to have a handgun. Federally, it's 18 to buy a handgun from an UNLICENSED private individual (eg NOT a gun shop). However, to purchase a handgun OR ITS AMMO from a federally licensed dealer, you must be 21 years of age.

In most states, a CCW is 21. Maine, Indiana, and a few other states are 18 for a CCW.

DISCLAIMER: State and local laws differ. Check with your state and local laws. In some states just about any age can possess a handgun, in some states age is 18, and in some 21.

Sorry but 21 is the law.

I know that in cases of responsible individuals it's not fair but it is the law.

Join the Marines next year and you can have an M249 SAW or a Javelin anti-tank missile.

But when you come home from the sand box you won't be legally able to carry a .22, or drink a beer!

I can't explain it but that's the law!

You have to be 21 to purchase a handgun under federal law. If your father purchases a gun for you then you both could go to jail since it is illegal to purchase a gun for someone that can't legally own it. I would not take any chances in MD they have some of the toughest gun laws in the country.

21 according to Federal law.
I don't know if there are exceptions, but I would doubt that there was, unless you are employed as a law enforcement officer or had a truly legitimate reason to be carrying a concealed handgun .

How could you "legally" carry it if you cannot legally go purchase one yourself?

21 is federal law for puchasing a hand gun. therefore you must be of legal age to get a concealed carry permit.

You have to be 21 to apply for a CCW permit, nationwide. And any job requiring you to be armed (i.e. Law Enforcement) you will have to be 21 when you start the job.
