Deep stuff Kallan, but I'll give it a shot.
When a man cares he opens himself up to the possibility of being hurt, therefore he is courageous and unafraid.
When he is fair, he leaves enough for others. Because fairness has taught him to be courteous to others and most likely this courtesy will be returned to him.
Which leads us to the last. When he is humble, he can grow.
By being fair and courteous he has learned to respect and value the opinions of others. From this comes humility, because he realizes that other people can offer different views than his own and open his consciousness to other ideas.
Well, there it is.
Peace and Love,
Your Pagan Bro,
John
P.S. The grey matter is now nearing critical mass! lol

I like that. But then, I've generally gotten a lot of good out of the sayings of Lao-Tzu.
The one that takes a bit of considering is the one about if he cares, he is unafraid. I would say rather that he does what is needed in spite of his fears. But it is more poetic to say it his way, and of course, there are those who simply do not even think about their own safety or comfort when they are focused on helping someone else. That's how I interpret "cares."

The only bit I disagree with is the first line.
Losing the things and people I care about is my only fear. I would say when a man has no care he has no fear. Apart from that is an extremely apt saying that I would agree with. A relative of Sun Tzu is he?

Good morning Kallan! (I am assuming you are not going to read these until tomorrow Oh wait, if thats the case its not tomorrow its today. Wow. Heavy)
This is a lovely thought to take to bed with me. I think the last line is the most important. You can not learn if you are not humble.

The Tao te Ching is one of those things that I never know how to respond to, really, I doubly don't know what to say as on one hand it is incredibly plain, it feels as if there is nothing one could possibly add to its simplicity, and nothing about it one can really contest, and on the other hand, the majority of it is in some way profound beyond words...
Well, at least for the caring bit, it seems to mean "act without being afraid" rather than being unafraid in of itself, as opposed to the boldness he relates to someone doesn't care that ultimately leads to their downfall...
That point made, I shall just be, and let these words continue to be... I can't think of a better way to honor them.

!That's really good Kallan!!
When a man cares he is unafraid.....How many of us have said and meant it that they would die for a loved one? Look at live organ donors...we were told that we "could" die doing what we did but we cared so much for the person, we were unafraid for ourselves!
When he is fair he leaves enough for others....Now that speaks for itself!
When he is humble he can grow.....well to be humble is to be Wise, how can one learn and grow when they think they already know it all!!
Here is a verse i have always loved!
When things are going well, ...
Be mindfull of adversity.
When prosperous,...
Be mindfull of poverty.
When loved,...
Be mindfull of thoughfullness.
When respected,....
Be mindfull of humility.
I hope you have had a blissfull nights sleep My Friend and awaken to a joyous new day!
Blessed Be!

All of these qualities ask for the mind to quiet, and the heart to open. Being vulnerable in the world can be scary - because the open heart feels it all. But the open heart brings empathy, compassion, which are powers beyond the mind
Compassion, caring, bring their own lights, and through these lights fear fades
Humility shifts you from your head into your heart, where you no longer choose to defend your position, but instead are always available for greater wisdom.
Watching, waiting for other open hearts to connect with............ true beauty, to me.

"When he is fair, he leaves enough for others"
Thats wonderful. I very much agree.
"When he is humble, he can grow."
I would agree with that, but i've also grown when I was really proud of something....
"When a man cares, he is unafraid"
I've known that to be true, but I've also cared very much about something and been extremely fearful of its outcome. I find that when one cares, they are placing their hope into something, and to give your hope over to something always brings on a level of fear.
I find asian religion to be very calm and peaceful, but I think it can be passive to a fault, and the self denial drives me crazy.
Asian religions ARE very peaceful, though. And absolutely beautiful.

Unselfish , unconditional love produces great courage,
Trusting there is enough love for all, one extends only mercy
Being humble, knowing you don't know everything, allows you to learn, evolve, recognize, (to know again) your freedom in the dance of life.
