You can spread the food around on a flat plate. It will take the dog longer to pick it up. You can also use mealtime to train him, giving a piece or two of dog food each time he does something you want to teach him (like "sit"). Use the food as a lure until he gets the idea. You'll slow him down and get him obedience trained at the same time.

I add a little water to dry food--that seems to make it less likely to "go down the wrong throat."

You can try giving him a little bit at a time, or you can put a large and very clean rock or heavy object in the middle of his bowl so that he has to eat around it. Spreading his food out on a sheet, such as a cookie sheet may help also. You can also check out this bowl. It's designed to keep dogs from eating too fast. I'm not sure if it's worth it, but you could try. http://www.brake-fast.net/index.htm
Good luck!

In my opinion, he will figure this out on his own in time but for now, make sure you leave him to himself ( you can be int he next room if you are worried) and remove other animals as well. Some puppies eat quickly I think because they are worried if they dont someone will eat the food out from under them. Some puppies have to fight their littermates a bit to get their share of food so this might be left over behavior from this time in his life. Hope this helps.

Yes sometimes 6 weeks, depending on the puppy, can be to early for a puppy to eat regular food. When my puppy was just as young as yours I used to cut up the food and make the pieces smaller so if he just swallowed the pieces, he wouldnt choke. You can also try giving your dog treats to chew on so it learns how to chew, so when it has a piece of food it can digest it. You can also try giving it some water if it ever chokes..

Depending on the breed....most dogs should actually have small kibble. If he eats too fast then you can moisten it a bit so he does not choke, or put a big rock (boulder) in the middle so he has to eat around it and move the rock a bit.
Good Luck

Use a large bowl and place a couple of large, heavy dog toys, or if needed, a brick in the bowl so he can't grab huge mouthfuls of food to gobble. That's a common problem in horses, and the large object in the feed pan really helps slow them down.

How about putting a little bit of water on the dry dog food? Just enough to moisten it.

Put his food on a large, rimmed cookie sheet. With the food spread out, he will have to work to get it. You don't want to withhold food because it may lead to anxiety and a food aggression. Puppies will work it out.
