This'll probably get deleted, but who the hell cares, right?
A lot of people responded to my last question (which was a joke, by the by) by saying that it was my fault for getting fired and obviously, I was a lazy, awful worker. This is not true, and frankly, in the p.o.ed state I'm already in, this makes me even more angry. So I'll attempt to defend myself, when I usually wouldn't bother.
I got fired for coming in to work today no more then five minuets late. I walked in, the manager on duty told me it was "unacceptable," then fired me. I'd been a hard, competent worker up until that point. Other managers often praised me for my hard work and dedication to the restaurant. I seriously have no idea why they would fire me over such a small thing, and it makes me really angry.
So there you have it. My humble defense. I know some of you will not believe me, but I know I'm telling the truth, and that's all that matters to me.
Countdown to deletion starting... now.

*lol8 thanks everyone. Don't worry, I'm not in any trouble financial-wise yet. I just payed off all of my bills before this happened, my mom's promised to help me out if I don't get a new job before next month, and I've got a great boyfriend who can take care of me till I find somewhere else. I'm more mad because I really like working there.

Look. I don't know how old you are or what your educational background is or anything about you. Did you ever see that ad from I.C.S. with the picture of the guy saying "Learn a good trade and you will never have to knuckle under to any man". I am 63 years old now. The ad was true. You have my word for it.

So what's your question?
If it's in the company policy that they can fire you for that, then sorry, they can. It might not be fair but if you took the job knowing that, they CAN fire you.
Now, if there is a policy in place that says that you have to have repeated offenses or be warned in writing first, then you might have a case for an argument.
If you really were fired because this was the first and only time you had ever been late, then I would go over the managers head and complain to their manager. Request that you be given a reason in writing as to why you were fired so you can "consider legal counsel" on the matter.
But if you've been warned even ONE other time about being late, sorry....start looking for another job.

Girl Wonder,
I am sorry you lost your job, many states are becoming right to hire which means at any give point you could lose your job even if the situation is out of your hands and not your fault.
If they don't like your shoes they can fire you. Jobs are never guaranteed especially out west. I lost my jobs one co I was at for 10 years and another for 2 years.
It appears you were a target of your managers anger. When God closes one door another will open. Your manager sounds like one miserable person and always remember girl wonder what goes around comes around.
I am praying for you. You are a smart lady you will get something better.

Know how you feel. I was fired for taking a weeks vacation, with permission, and am still p.o.ed about it. To Kallan if you read this, not all H.R. people care one way or another about employee's, more about weather they can sue or get unemployment. Sounds like you at least have your head in the right spot.

That's just WRONG to be fired for being 5 minutes late. You should do some research on the internet as to the labor code in your state. I don't think they can fire you on the spot for one infraction such as that. Employee records must be documented with signed "warnings" etc. At least in many states, that's the case.

If what you say is true, and you are not notorious for being late every day, them I would be angry too.
Didn't they have a talk with you about this before?
Don't you have to have at least 3 pink slips before they can fire you?
It's too late now, I'm sure you wouldn't want to force your way back into that company anyway, but there may be some legal action you can take if you want to pursue it.

I got fired from my first job (which was in a kitchen/convenience store) because I was supposed to clean the grocery shelves. Well, along with cleaning the shelves (as in, taking all the stuff off, wiping down the products individually AND the shelf) I also had to man the kitchen and the register. While the owner sat on his butt watching tv. He told me that they weren't clean enough when he fired me, but damn it took me days just to get them all done because I was having to do everything, by the time I finished the first shelves were dusty again!

That sucks - I'm sorry. How about going back to school? Compatent scientists are pretty much never fired, plus you don't have to show up on time - no one cares when you come and go, as long as you eventually get some work done. It's great.
Great! Then don't worry about it. It's a stupid job. You can always get another. Screw them - you're getting a degree!

Sorry to hear that......It would be petty to say the least for someone to cause a known R&S member's question to be deleted when it involves loss of their source of income....
Sounds like your boss had another agenda.....it certainly does not sound very fair at all......I feel bad for you......and will pray for God to open up another door of opportunity that would surpass what you have lost.
