A merchant marine is a commercial boat hand. Someone whose job is on a commercial vessel.

A Marine is a member of the US Armed Forces. A Merchant Marine is a civilian sailor who is a member of the union.

merchant Marines are not a armed force , they simply are hired out to move equiment from place to place where as the Marines as in USMC are a armed service branch of the Navy.

when we were deployed to Iraq the equipment was loaded on a merchant marine ship and waiting on us when we go there. they are just saliors for a private firm
