An adult Northern Mockingbird is about 9-11" or approximately the same size as a robin. It is gray with white patches on its wings and tail. It often mimics other birds, and generally repeats its call or song three times in a row. Actually, it is one of the best avian mimics, with over 200 songs in its repertoire. It is very noisy at times, especially at night during nesting season.

A Northern Mockingbird will lay 3-5 blue-green eggs spotted with brown. It takes 12-13 days for the eggs to hatch and another 10-13 days for the babies to fledge (leave the nest).

During the fall and winter, Northern Mockingbirds will eat a lot of fruit and berries, but during nesting and feeding of their young, they consume mostly insects.

Baby Mockingbirds need to be fed as often as their parents can find the insects for them. Nestlings need to be fed approximately every 20-30 minutes from dawn to dusk, and fledglings eat slightly less than that. That is if the parents are feeding them. If they are being hand-reared by a licensed wildlife rehabilitator, the frequency of feeding depends on the exact type of formula the rehabber is using. Different formulas have different nutritional content, and so, to be sure the bird is getting the proper nutrition, the rehabilitator needs specific training.

The parents will feed them every five minutes or so when they first hatch, then less frequently as they grow. The fledglings should be trying to forage by themselves, but the parents will still feed them for a while. They eat many insects and fruit, and will come to your feeders for suet, mealworms, bread, donuts, etc.
