hello gaby Sometimes, if people are depressed, it can be hard for them to explain to others how they feel, and they may not even have the energy to try. That isolation can lead them to take their pain and anger out on themselves. They may use a brief episode of self-mutilation as a way to express how they feel. They may scratch up their arms or legs once or twice and then leave it at that. For others, though, it can turn into a regular thing.
"I had thoughts about suicide, but I wouldn't ever have attempted it. [Cutting] was just a way of doing something a lot less severe and a lot less permanent to express what I was feeling. I guess I didn't have any other way. It really scared me, because I was making myself bleed and it freaked me out. I felt that I just had so much pain inside me and so much I was going through that I felt like nobody could see, so I quantified it. That was what it was about for me, I think. It was like, 'This is how bad it is.'" Marlee, 21
People who cut regularly when they are experiencing severe emotional pain often have a ritual around their cutting that includes a special place and particular tools. The physical pain of self-mutilation replaces the emotional pain they are feeling -- it becomes a necessary release. Cutting, burning, scarring (picking at scabs repeatedly to make a deeper scar), and pulling out your hair are all types of self-mutilation. Some people bang their head until they pass out, or break their own bones. Self-mutilation is not about wanting to die, it's about trying to feel alive. ingsaludossssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

You really have to be more descriptive in what kind of carving you're talking about.
If you're looking at "cutters" or others that find some sort of justification in mutilation of their bodies, that's more of a mental health issue than anything else.
However, I have found a few artists that will use carving of the skin to help better outline tattoos before needling the ink in. I've also seen some people who use carving to make tribal insignias in much the same way of the tribal skin burnings/searings that are popular in some cultures.

Well, I did it as a teenager, and I did it basically for two or three different reasons. One, the people I was hanging out with were doing it and I wanted to look cool to them, two, I was an angry teenager, and that was a way of venting some of my anger, and three, I think that, at the time, I kind of enjoyed the 'sensory input' I received by doing it (I've since heard of research that says that one's body actually releases some sort of "feel good" type of message to the brain when one cuts themselves). Oh, and also the attention from people that saw it. Would I do it now, or do I think it is okay? No, I think that people who do it may need professional help, depending on the situation.

Are you talking about cutting for self mutilation out of depression? Or about scarrification through cutting?
Cutting for depression is a control thing, if the person is serious about it. Serious cutters, don't cut arms and don't want to get caught.
Scarrifcation through cutting is a very old practice. It's done by cutting an image into the skin with a scalpel. I had my back done, and I love the whole process. To me, it can be better than tattoos. I got angel wings. I plan on adding more detail this summer.

For themselves.
Leviticus 19:28 says - "Do not cut your bodies for the dead". They do it for themselves instead (the dead never even say "thank you" anyhow, just "nnnnrrrrraaaa........").
