Hey folks, I plan on getting my first tattoo tomorrow in commemoration of the publication of my first novel (of a graphic that is central in the book). On the 4th of July (11 days after) I'm going to be outside a little, perhaps doing a little wakeboarding with some friends. I'll keep a shirt on and wear lots of sunscreen (and hopefully not fall, haha), but do you think that it's too soon, with regards to the tattoo fading?

Keep it covered with a waterproof dressing, long as it's not too large. I reckon by 11 days it should have finished scabbing but to be sure, just keep it covered when you go in the water.

Congrats on your novel! I think thats way too soon. The guy who tatted me told me to reallllly be careful the first few weeks. Even after months go by.. if you go into the sun.. put 30spf on it because you dont want it to fade. Ive only had mine for a year but it still looks like I got it yesterday =) Ask you tat guy too and see what he recommends... and make sure he can do tattoo's, check out his stuff before you... Because some people CANT do tattoos well lol.. best wishes

Congrats on the novel! That's quite an achievement.

If you cover it to avoid the sun, you're fine. However, more water than just showering really should wait at least a month. Boarding of any kind will probably soak it too much.

Fading will happen over time, depending on how much you hide it from the sun, but the first handful of weeks away from sun AND the water are probably the most important.

it is imperative that you stay out of the sun and especially out of the water with a new tattoo. it is an open wound and exposing it to the germs and bacteria in a public water space whether it be an ocean, lake, river or pool you will be introducing tons of harmful things to your body thru your new tattoo. you could definitely get staph infection from doing that. not to mention that sunscreen does not protect your tattoo from the harmful uv rays. you really should have done some better tattoo planning.

I had my first tatoo 6 weeks ago...everybody has their own advice as to what's the best... I was told not to let it form a scab, wash it often, moisturize as needed... fading won't happen the first day, that takes over exposure... ex: "years".
Good luck with it, I like the theme you chose!!

you should stay out of the water as much as possible while your tat is healing. the water only keeps it moist you need it to dry out and heal. always put sunscreen on your tats to protect your color from fading.

Too soon.
The tattoo artist will fill you in on all the aftercare instructions, though.
