Most hummingbirds fly south to warmer climates..most end up wintering in South America. Some species, such as the Anna's Hummingbird are non-migratory and stay put year round. Yes, they fly...sometimes thousands of miles to get to their wintering grounds.

John James Audubon, the famous bird man himself supposedly started the silly rumor that hummers hitch rides on the backs of geese and ducks for their long trip. Supposedly he shot a goose on a hunting trip and out flew a hummer when he lifted the goose off the ground. Obviously, the hummer was not in the goose feathers, but was close enough that when the goose was moved, the hummer LOOKED like it was flying out of the goose. Anyways, it is proven that they simply fly on their own, across the Gulf of Mexico for many, or down through Mexico itself. I live in SoCal, so ours just stay through the winter.

By the way, I remember seeing in the magazine, Birds and Blooms, the fishing boats have feeders on them, during the time the hummingbirds migrate. They come in on the boats for a little rest, and to "fuel up". Isn't that nice of the fishermen?

Hummingbirds really fatten up with nectar, and then amazingly fly across the Caribean to spend their winters in South American jungles.
