You should not get (or administer) heartworm pills without a prescription because if you give it to a dog who has already contracted heartworms, it can KILL the animal.
It is necessary for your vet to do a blood test and determine that the worms are not present, first, THEN the animal can be started on the meds. Only exception would be a young pup, which can be assumed has not contracted the heartworms. He would not have to have the bloodwork drawn initially. In any case you must get the prescription from a vet.

You cannot get prescription preventatives on or offline without a prescription from your veterinarian.
However, you CAN purchase ivermectin (the active ingredient in Heartgard) at any local feed store - *several* words of caution though: ivermectin will kill certain breeds of dogs so be certain that your dog can tolerate this before you purchase it. Also, if you do choose this method for heart worm prevention - you must be *precise* in your calculations for dilution. Ivermetcin IS a poison - if you give too much, it will kill your pet - not enough and your pet may end up with heart worm disease. My husband and I have used this method successfully with our pets for several years with no problems whatsoever. If you are unsure of the exact amount your pet needs, ask your veterinarian for help with the calculations - it's better to be safe than sorry!

Don't listen to anyone who says buying meds online is bad, or unsafe. Just be smart about it. American corporations bid Congress not to allow Americans to buy meds from overseas, purely for monetary issues, not with safety issues... if safety is what they had in mind, dont you think that our government would be a little MORE proactive in preventing all these recalls from China? I mean really, how many people and pets have to die, before they start realizing
China is trying to kill us... (don't order anything from China...) I would only order meds from Western civilized countries like Canada, Great Britain, or Australia.
I have been purchasing my dog's meds online from a place in Australia for about 5 years now... They are AWESOME... Great prices, shipping is cheap, and they are REAL products... I had a friend check them out down there...
oh yeah, i WOULD recommend having your dog heartwormed tested before you use the meds... it could kill your dog if you give them a pill and they are heartworm positive... go to your local animal shelter or humane society- they usually provide vet care at low costs...

You can't. Heartworm preventions are prescription drugs. You should have a vet for the dog, and if the dog is current on his exam and heartworm test, the vet should have no problem writing you a prescription. This is providing good basic care.
